Ok question. One day I plan on building another rifle. Will be a semi. If you had to choose between the ar10 in 308 or a ar15 in 6.5 Grendel which one? They both seem to have almost identical drop out to 800yds. The 308 has a bigger bullet. The 6.5 is in a smaller package. And basic ammo for the 6.5 is cheap.

Pros cons?? Need in put from the masters ;)

Based on those 2 choices I'd go grendel. Cheaper ammo, components and almost zero recoil.

Now if you're planning on something to do with the ar10 platform and aren't committed to 308 then I'd try to sway you over to that and use something like a 6.5 creedmoor.

Burned out is right in my opinion. I had a grendel and loved it. They are just fun to shoot and I would put it up against any deer in the Carolinas. I used the grendel for DMM matches. Great gun and doesn't weigh that much. With 100 yard zero I was at 11.3 mils at 1000 yards and it was very accurate.

Like burned out said if you go with an ar10 platform I would go with something other than 308. I'm not saying 308 is a bad round by any means but the 6.5 creed is just ballistically better. Also ammo for the 6.5 creed isn't bad at all from hornady if you don't reload.

308, better variety of ammo that is plentiful most everywhere you go and reloading components out the wazu if you reload. I have 308, 6.5 Creed and 260 uppers. If the 6.5 and the 260 barrel burn out I'll rebarrel to 308.

Only advantage 308 realistically has over the Grendel is availability and that is if you don't hand load your own ammo. Get into reloading and I can't see any really good reason to not go with the Grendel.

Grendel is superior ballistically than 308, recoil is much less, cost of components virtually identical in match grade stuff. What's not to like from the Grendel?

I picked up a few boxs of the Hornady black match and a box of federal fusion ( probably be my hunting ammo till I load up some).

With the .308 maxing out at about 900 yards and the old reliable .30-06 maxing out at over 1200 yards, why not go with the .30-06. The old proverb said it best, "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". The only reason for the .308 Remington, 7.62 NATO, was to attempt to reduce recoil when the military wanted to go to a full auto rifle for the troops.

Yes, a good shooter can push a .308 out past 900 yards but the same shooter can push the .30-06 out even farther. Of course a .50 will out shoot both.

I think the op wanted to stick with an ar plateform

Ya this is just a void filler for now. I will get a AR10 one day and most likely it will be in 6.5 creedmoor ( the ammo is very easy to find local).

But I read alot of good things about the Grendel.

6.5s are the new .300 Blackout. Everyone with an AR platform has to have one. Meanwhile I'm quietly stacking away cheap .308 components and surplus ammo for dirt.

Oh and .260 Rem is the 6.5 to rule them all. Build one of those in an AR10 and I may be interested.

260 is great. But brass life just isn't great. That's what my long range rig is chambered in now. 6x47 lapua is my next build. I might be putting the 260 up for sale soon.
