350 CHEV questions

For a stock, low compression engine the MSD helps a little, but not as much as on a high compression, high RPM engine.

HEI ain't bad at all, and as Tucci said it works well for stock applications.

Sneaky did you have any problems rebuilding that 4bbl? You didnt mention an engine transplant....lol. I have a 6.0LS 325hp that I could chunk in the truck when I come back to Greenesboro. You would need an engine management harness and such and an electric fuel pump too. Your truck has A/C if I recall....just keep the ol 350 and keep drivin her!

I finished cleaning that carburetor last night. So I will be putting it back together tonight. We shall see how it goes. I really don't anticipate any problems.

There's a really good engine shop over here, I think I'm going to take it over and let them just go through the engine and do a small cam like was suggested earlier on and just keep the 350 in it.

When I put it in reverse it takes about 30 seconds for it to start easing back. So that transmission is going to need somebody to go in there and work on it. So that'll be another thousand dollars I don't need to spend on an engine. But it's a turbo 350 transmission so that shouldn't be too hard to get worked on.

I would do a fluid and filter change first. Maybe run some SeaFoam trans tune in it before the fluid change. Also make sure the modulator valve is working properly. Thats a easy external component to swap out if its sticky.

Like Mike said that modulator valve and the vacuum line going to it as well. A simple filter change after Seafoam additive/drained may fix all that. AND replace all the vacuum lines on the engine and I bet she will run like a top!

There are a lot of worn, dry vacuum lines on it. I expect that might be some issue.

Then the Marvin the Martian " Oh goodie! My Illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator." thing that you mentioned. :) Time to Google that now. :)

When you put it in Drive gears, forward gears, it engages very quickly. It's just when it's in Reverse, that's when it takes a second to catch up. More like about 15 seconds.

ok, so Quadrajet is rebuilt, and back on the truck. It seems to be smoking more (running rich?) I tinkered with the two screws up front, backed them out about 2 turns . I drove it up the road, and it runs well, until the secondaries kick in. Then it seems like its starving for fuel or flooding? I need to find someone that can adjust it.

Damn near need a voodoo doc for those things

Float height in the carb can sometimes flood it if set wrong. Disconnect the 4bl linkage if you can just run it on the 2bl....it takes a piece out of the diagnostics. Is that year still a points distributor or do you have an (HEI)electronic ingition? And timing might be involved but if it ran before it should run now. Check plug wires on both ends to make sure you didnt pull a boot off.
Fortunately she is an old girl so one can still work on them without a computer....lol...hang tite its fixable!

Yeah Mike... Im the type of guy who wanted to tear it apart to learn how it works. Then.. .UT oh. Lol

I haven't out HEI on it yet. So I'll check. Another think is the fuel filer. It had some little wierd filter on it. I may have put thst in backwards. I'm learning as I go. It's not a daily driver so I'm in no hurry.

If I did chose to put another carb on it.... The electric choke will be new. Is that just a hot wire from somewhere ?

Does it have the pull out choke in the dash? If you power an electric unit Im not sure if its "run hot" or "keyed hot".
That year may have the "spring choke" that sets in the manifold...I have a couple years of truck manuals and a 69 CST in the garage so Ill do some diggin and lookin. Yours is a 72?

The JB weld part was new to me....I wish he would have spent a little more time on that issue and mating. Good video though....it never hurts to refresh for sure.
Setting the float height I did not see but maybe I missed it.

I had looked over those vids . They were helpful. It has a spring choke attached to the intake.

Did it do this before the rebuild?

Google "Quadrajet secondary air valve adjustment". I think this may help.
