3D printing Thread.

Preheating the bed and exturder is little compare to the amount of control you have with S3D and the constant update/forums. If you have questions on that software I can be more help.

I'm sure I'll adjust, but hope support tells me there's a way to preheat all at once. It just doesn't make sense that there's not a checkbox to enable or disable how the preheating behaves.

So far, after a bit of wasted PLA, I have the right extruder making some pretty nice prints. Not necessarily any better than QIDI Print, but S3D does build structures better. I like some of the preview abilities, cost estimation and JPG to 3D conversion. I think maybe it slices more efficiently, too. Once over the sticker shock, I'm sure I'll justify the cost with neat features.

Now time to delve into 3D modeling. I'm trying Autodesk 123D Design and Microsoft 3D Builder.

preheat both on the machine. It should be in your startup process. Then when you go to print, its already warmed up

For you guys that are doing this stuff - did you have a lot of background with designwork before, or was it quick and easy to figure out in those programs?

That's what I meant when I said I was doing it manually. I am starting it on the printer manually while preparing my x3g file. S3D wrote me and said there's a way in Gcode script to preheat all at once, but then didn't tell me exactly how (pointed me to a forum). Evidently a lot of folks don't like it, so maybe it'll change in the future to a switchable option.

Yea..I tuned my priming system in the G-code. I don't worry about the preheat but I run ABS and other exotic filaments.

@Djstorm100 Any idea why this happens only in S3D?

Doesn't happen when I use any other slicer. The first corner of every new print doesn't fill properly.

Any tips are appreciated. For the most part, S3D is working great.

Slow your speed down. Or add to the retraction. The extruder can't pull filament when it makes a rapid and then apply it again.

Im interested in one of your services.
I saw where someone made a 3D printed helmet holder to mount on the wall. I want something that will show off my various motorcycle helmets that are now retired.

Any of yall familiar with something like that? Quote?

I'll run one to see how it comes out and check the strength. If I run it wall side down it won't be as strong, so will run it like the picture below. This will make the sides of different texture (not bad).

You can see the build stats on the top left. Once done, I'll take a picture next to something for scale. It's pretty big.

Do you, by chance, have any helmets that you could try with it?
And there are holes for screws, yes?

The screw holes are printed in it just like the photo a couple messages above and picture of helmet on hanger. Those pictures are from the model designer. No helmets here. It's plenty strong.

If I send someone with a 3d printer a STL file, is it as simple as loading the file and pressing print, or is manipulation of the file required prior to printing?

You send them the STL file. They use slicer software to prepare the job for their printer and material.

There are good designs and bad designs, and STL files with errors. Not all STL files, preparation software or printers are created equal.

You can also search 3d file sites for designs you may want printed or modified for your use. The site I visit most often is https://www.thingiverse.com/

It's amazing how alike you realize we are when you look for something to fit your need and find that others already had the same need and contributed a design. Look at the license type on each item before reproducing or having someone else print, or for commercial production.

manipulating the file is needed if their slicer (CAM) doesn't read STL files. Then STL file has to be change to a different format. CAM software has to be programed like a cnc machine (which it is just different operation). Speed/feeds/temperature/first layer specs/additonal layers specs/ fan on/off /etc.

Products came in yesterday, look awesome! Off to the hardware store today to pick up some screws/drywall anchors and get these mounted.

You should make a small 'for sale' thread so I can get you some feedback on here.
Really nice looking parts man, thank you so much!

I'm glad you like them. Let me know when you want more. Thank you.

I'm very likely going to buy myself a 3D printer for Xmas. I've been eyeing the Monoprice Maker Select v2 at $255, however reading on slickdeals I saw that the Creality CR10 has a much larger print volume (300x300x400mm vs 200x200x180mm), only $100 more, and seems to also be highly regarded.

Is there any reason not to spend the extra $100 on the CR10?

EDIT: I did about an hour of research and can't really come up with anything negative about the CR10, other than the software is pretty much locked and can't be modded/updated without hacking, and the low price sources typical ship direct from China and take weeks. The Maker Select v2 requires a MOSFET upgrade to prevent it from overheating and potentially catching fire, ~$30 mod.

If those are your only two choices, I'd buy the CR-10. You'd outgrow the build size on the Monoprice almost immediately. The CR-10 seems to be a good open frame printer for the $$$.

I wouldn't say those are my only choices however I want to keep it in the $300 ballpark and those appear to be the best non-kit-build options in that range that are capable of printing a variety of materials including ABS, for which I'll eventually build an enclosure.

Look at the CTC on ebay for $360. It's a Replicator clone. I don't know anything about that specific brand though.

Fully functional 8-shot revolver can made at home by anyone with a 3D printer

Reminds me of that 'In the Line of Fire' movie with Eastwood and John Malcovich

I've decided to wait for BF when I will buy a CR10. The CR10S has some nice upgrades such as dual Z axis motor ($70) and filament sensor & board upgrade ($120) but I don't want to spend $600. I may do the upgrades myself at some point. The biggest downside to me is the mediocre heating element for the bed. There are upgrades available to more reliably print non-PLA filaments.

There is a ton of support for the CR10, a bunch of small mods you can print yourself (as with most printers), and it's the best print volume per dollar value out there at just 1 cent/cm3! From what I've seen in multiple YT reviews, the print quality is surprisingly good too.

The CR-10, I'm sure, will make a good printer. Sounds like a lot of mods to get there. There's several types of owners... those that revel in the hardware and those that just want a working printer out of the box. Computer geeks are the same way.

If I buy a larger build space printer, the CR-10 is definitely on the short list.

BF? What? BoyFriend buying it for you? ;)

So I pounced! Grabbed a CR-10S (upgraded version) for $456 shipped via a deal and coupon on Gearbest!!!

Congratulations!

Seriously, keep a good eye on your order. A lot of horror stories about gearbest, especially by 3D printing people. I've not ordered from gearbest for the complaints.

Thanks. I've read a lot of the same, seems to be a little spotty but I could t resist the price so I'll certainly keep an eye on things and won't hesitate to file a dispute with PayPal and my cc.

As for the CR-10 being discontinued, it would make sense to disco, but when the same thing was mentioned on fb this morning, others were quick to point out the other listings on Gearbest still showing availability. I don't understand why they have like 4 listings and then 4 options within each.

So I guess I can start contributing to this thread too! Ordered the Amazon version of the cr-10s and got it setup last night. So far I've had two successful test print a and a few bad starts. I think I've started to get the idea of what works and what doesn't. Ordered some cool pla from proto-pasta too.

Im in the market for something else that may or may not exist already, but before I go off searching the W W W, I thought I'd ask here and try to support one of yall.

Here is what I want - I want something that I could hang my smart phone from my rear view mirror.

So it'd need to have some sort of 'hook' and then a cradle to hold the phone securely. I want it for googlemaps, and dont really have options in my car for suction cup mounts and dont LIKE suctioning stuff to window.
I dont need it all the time, so I'd have to remove the suction cup etc etc and that'd leave those little rings on my window.

Anything out there like that?
