As an aside...wth? Forcing people out of the store and into the area where armed robbery is happening?
Not the brightest move, Sammy boy. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts somebody tries to sue Sams Club in the near future.
I'm sure it made it a lot more difficult for the responding officers too.

Award for Stupidest Headline This Week:

Woman talks about being inside Sam’s Club in Winston-Salem as 4 men with rifles robbed a man in the parking lot

RYKM? Fox8's news story originated and revolved around talking to one scared shopper??

Deep investigative reporting, NOT.

Some time back, my wife had a recurring dream where I was accidentally shot while at a range. She said I was mad as hell as they loaded me into the back of a pickup for the trip to an ER. For a couple of years I wore concealed body armor to all events and competitions. It was a good exercise. It exposed some issues with gear fit and body armor getting in the way.

That was just her subconscious thirsting for that Life Insurance..... :D

I've never seen a sign at Costco.

"The suspects had rifles and assaulted the victim, taking a black plastic bag with his wallet inside, according to a police press release."

Who carries their wallet inside a black plastic bag? ???

Never seen a sign.
A bullet point way down in a contact they know that nobody reads seems pretty much unenforceable beyond revoking a membership.

Well, Costco is more than welcome to revoke my membership and refund my membership fee. Until then I may or may not be carrying whilst there. Also, I never signed a damn thing there. That was the wife's doing.

Yep, that was my thought until my membership expired an I didn’t renew. As long as the location is not posted you only are in breach of contract not violating NC statutes.

I'm not allowed in Costco or any of the membership warehouses, because I embarrass my wife every time we go. That's because I refuse to stop for the people at the door that want to look at my receipt and whatever's in my cart. Nope, not stopping. Walk right past them. Even more fun when there's 3-4 people waiting and I roll right past all of them. Had one of the old ladies start screaming for security one time. If they ever actually attempt to force me to stop, I'll roll it all over to customer service and get a refund.

So now I go to Costco to get propane, and that's it. Everything else is up to her. :D

Yep, they save you $1 on every $100 you spend and they treat you like shoplifter. Screw them. I willingly pay other stores more that treat me like a law abiding human,

Here’s the scoop as I’ve heard...of course it’s from a friend who talked to an employee...so it could be true, may not.

The guy who was robbed had around $10k with him. He would drive down here, load up on cigarettes and drive them back up north to sell at a profit. Some ol smugglin action. Some folks found out about it and jacked him for the cash. So it wasn’t a random attack.

So... It was the BATF. :D

Nope. N.C. statute says the posting must be conspicuous. Conspicuous, which hasn’t had a legal challenge that I know of that would define it otherwise, generally mans in a manner designed to get attention. Putting a statement or a line in the agreement that nobody is going to read is most certainly the opposite of conspicuous.

Here's where you see the effects of prohibition and the rise of the black market. Nothing illegal about smokes - but the cost with the government involving itself creates an opportunity for a alternate source.

People will get the things they want regardless of silly words on paper, or hired muscle to enforce those words.

I was not aware about Costco I rarely go there, but this is not enforceable with the NC statue I am sure. Even if it was wouldn’t it be a simple fine now? I think this is a good example why they changed the penalty for carrying in off limits places.

Yeah....

God forbid an enterprising citizen makes a profit on a legal substance. Meanwhile, .gov, while having no part in the manufacturing process, believe they have the authority to profit handsomely via regulation/taxes....at the point of a gun, if need be.

That's nothing but legalized armed robbery. "We can make money off of this, but it's verboten for you, citizen, to do the same. If you do and we catch you, we will lock you away."

There ain't a damned bit of difference between that and a gang "turf war".

Cigarettes are no cheaper at Sam's than anywhere else so he must have been from waaaaay up north for it to be worth the trip/effort. And I seriously doubt that Sam's even had 10K worth of cigs in inventory, so the story doesn't exactly add up...

I have a relative that lives in OH who used to use them before quitting. He used to visit and stock up because they were much cheaper here.

Yeah...no...on all accounts...

As of April 2017

http://fairreporters.net/health/prices-of-cigarettes-by-state/

Average cost of a pack in NC: $5.45
Average cost of a pack in Conn: $9.52
Average cost in NY: $12.85

The victim was from Conn.

$4-7 difference on a per pack basis. $40-70 per carton.

$10,000 would only buy roughly 180-190 cartons of smokes. And nowhere in the story that was conveyed did they mention that he was purchasing them all from the same store. He drove from Connecticut...driving to a few different stores isn’t that big of a stretch.

So, like I said. It’s from the source of some who were there. Your “cost analysis” disagreement is what doesn’t add up.

Several years ago, cigs were over $10-$12 a pack in Mass.

I've been going to the WS Sam's for about a year .
I've seen people from time to time that seem to be out of place in the parking lot, more so than Costco that's not far away.
You've got to be aware of the people around you everywhere you go.

Reread what I wrote

... I said that it would only be a breach of contract as long as the location (and as we all know CostCo has many in many states) is not posted (and some are posted while others are not)

... not a violation of NC statutes.
Sorry, you are correct. I misread what you typed. I missed the not.

Parking lots are a fringe or transitional place and the bad things usually happen in those areas.
