My dad passed away a couple of weeks ago so I'm thinking about home defense for mom.
I'm thinking about a 20 gauge or 410 semi auto that's not terribly expensive but is dependable.
She has a single shot that was my dad's but I'd rather that she had more than 1 round.
Do you guys have any suggestions?
Any help is appreciated.

Depends on her physical size? If she is smaller I would recommend either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 in a youth/compact model. If she is larger I would suggest the same makes and models but in the full size version. With my personal preferences to the Remington. Nothing wrong with Mossberg, I own a serval of them. They have never let me down, but the Remingtons I own have a better feel and fit to my body shape and size. I would go with 20 gauge if she isn't recoil sensitive. If recoil is a issue then I would look at the .410 gauge.

I have a CZ720 semi auto that I just love. I own a 870, mossberg 500, rem 100 and a ak 12ga but I love that CZ more than any of them. It shoots so soft I will never part with it.

Really no comparison on ballistics/power 20ga buck is wicked , 410 is anemic in comparison
go gas operated semi 20 ga it will be soft recoiling and a relative powerhouse

I think I'm going to pick up a Hatfield semi auto 20 gauge.
I'm gonna run a few hundred rounds through it and if it passes the test I'll let mom try it.
Thanks a lot guys!

I am going on the record to say I don't want to be shot by either!!!
Try a mix of slugs/ buck shot.

It looks like it's based on the CZ920. Nearly identical, The CZ we bought for Lauren runs like a champ. Both are Huglo guns.

410 will work its not as deadly but lets face it dead is dead. 20 gauge will work. Ive killed many a bird, squirrel, rabbit, with it. Even a groung hog.

This ^^^. I have an old Remington 870 20 ga. youth model that I got for my son when he was growing up that I keep for home defense. Load with some # 1 or # 2 buckshooters and I am very happy with it. The youth model is nice and compact and light weight, much more maneuverable in tight quarters than a full size shotgun.

I will tell you a pump shotgun is the worst firearm to get for her.

I would go buy a 10/22 with a red dot and a 32 end mag and call it done.

I'm not going with a pump shotgun because I don't want her to have to think about how to work it in a stressfull situation. I figured a semi auto would be simpler but a10/22 is something I haven't considered.
Are you suggesting it because of weight, recoil or all of the above?
That just might be the best option. I'll have to pick one up for her to try out.
