The 416 B&M is my favorite "Small---Bigger Bore" rifle and cartridge. I see 416 caliber as being, adequate for buffalo, but not the hammer that 458+ caliber is........ but 416 is superb on most other species, when you combine it with a proper bullet designed
for the mission you embark upon...............

I am reminded this morning about the 416 B&M simply because Layne Simpson features it in his "Wildcat Cartridges" Column in April 2021 issue of Handloader Magazine. Handloader Magazine at one time was my most favorite gun rag of all time, I have most all copies back to the very first ones. A few years ago I really got rather bored with it, I mean how many ways can you load 45 ACP or 38 Spl? Enough, so I quit my subscription. I suppose I will have to get one online or pick up a few copies somewhere.............

Like the other RUM based 2.240-2.250 cases, it calls a Winchester M70 Control Feed WSM action home. Standard barrel length is 20 inches. Extremely versatile and a very easy shooting rifle. Its not a serious recoil stock busting cartridge and I have a few 20 inch guns simply built on the Winchester stocks they came in, and never had an issue with them. One is a Super Grade gun, one of the first built that my boys used and loved in Africa in 2008. I also have another AI Stocked Myrtle gun, it is the test rifle used for load data and bullet work. But perhaps my favorite is the little tiny Ultimate Stocked 18 inch version, it comes in at 6.5 lbs no scope and is a dream to carry and shoot..............it would be a top choice for bear in Alaska, and actually is used quite a bit in Alaska, there are two bear guides that carry 416 B&Ms in their profession. Others have used 416 B&M with great success in both Alaska and Africa.

I had a good friend Sean Russell from TX. He was a big 416 B&M Fan, and used it extensively on his first and unfortunately last trip to Africa a few years ago. Sean passed a couple of years later and is no longer with us.

Back a few years ago Jon Sundra did a B&M article for some magazine, called Safari Fast Wildcats. In this article he stated his favorite was the 416 B&M.........

Some years ago Winchester made a 1885 single shot in various WSM cartridges. I saw that as a good opportunity to convert to some of the B&M cartridges, so I picked up a few of these rifles and had them converted........ I have always been a fan of 1885s and Ruger #1s.......... Never cared much for the Sharps or some others.

My 1885s have unfortunately been on the back burner for a long time, many years. I have been shooting the 458 and 416s yesterday and today to get them shooting, sighted in, and a load specific to each. The 458 B&M was easy, its set up for a 405 Remington at 1600 fps, easy........... The 416 is a bit more of an issue. I almost have it set up to shoot 225 Raptor loads, that I use in the bolt guns, its about an inch high at 25 yards. And that is as low as it will go. I am trying a few other things today to see if I can get it in......... I could change up the front sight, but really don't want to do that or get that involved............. I tried some 375 Cast bullets, but they would not work with any of the sights I have, unless I changed up the front. Hopefully I can get something suitable to work today...................
