So a little bit ago, my wife asked me "ooh, what are you baking?"
Me: "um... barrels"

See, at a gun show in the late fall, I bought 5 blem barrels on clearance. Being a smart man, I put them in the garage so my wife wouldn't see them, with the intention of getting them into the safe soon.
Being a dum man, i forgot about them.
Being a dummer man, I was still thinking about winter being like up in MI (cold enough to stop chemistry and dryer than [insert inappropriate reference]). I did not really expect the constant cool, rain, fog, condensation cycles of these here sand hills.

So all the barrels were mottled and patchy with bits of surface rust. The bores looked good the other day, but the surfaces were still ugly.

Tap water in the kitchen sink, 000 steel wool, into the oven at 225° for a while to dry, then liberal amounts of hoppes 9 oil inside and out while they were still very warm to the touch..

I think they all cleaned up okay. They were meant to be meme/plinker/fun rifles/pistols anyway. Except one is now being built into a 10.5" home defense pistol and a suppressor mount is being pulled from a different barrel... but whatever. if it runs and can hit minute of man at 20 yards, it's more than good enough.

all of those stainless barrels could be soaked in vinegar and salt bath and come out rust free easy.

Went to build one of the barrels into a pistol...
came out with this problem:

Tried a different mag release and the same thing happened. Tried an anderson lower instead of a spikes and both releases worked fine. I have another spikes that has an SBR stamp on it that needs to be built, and that makes me nervois.

I also found out I don't have the right gas tube, and something isn't fitting right for the forward assist. and the roll pin is flared and all jacked up now.
I know I haven't built one for almost a year, but daaaang.

Three thoughts:
1. Pics aren’t showing up for me, so I can’t see the issue
2. I have two SBRs on Spike’s lowers and both work fine...I wouldn’t be too concerned
3. You have three years from the day you paid the tax to ask for a refund. If you can’t build the SBR, it never existed.

Sent the same pictures to Spike's and they no-questions-asked told me to give the my mailing address and they'd send me a shipping label to figure out what's going on and take care of it.
something makes me feel the odds are better that they are already aware of a batch with a problem than they are interested in just being a good merchant, but i'll take that kind of service either way.

stripped everything down (except for the bolt release) and rebuilt on an anderson. I'm sure I'll strip it all down again once the winds change. Or maybe I'll just build another one just like it.. who knows.

Follow-up!

I never got a response from spikes after i sent them my info, so after a while i emailed again and asked if the 'rona got them.
apparently my email got lost somewhere in the intertubes and they never got it (?). After reaching out again they issued me a shipping label pretty fast.
They said everything was in spec and they don't know why it wasn't working for me, but they didn't have any problems on their end (??), but they'd send me a new lower anyway.
So now I have a new new lower. Still a color filled snowflake, but the serial number isn't as cool. On the bright side, the mag release channel seems to be straight and isn't giving me any problems this time around.

Oh, and it came with a bolt release installed, since that's the way i sent the old one in :)
