I have a Savage FLCP-K in .308 that I never shoot...so I thought I'd buy or build a 6.5 Creedmoor that I'll never shoot instead.

Trying to decide if I should rebarrel the Savage or build an AR10 pattern. Thoughts on gas guns vs. bolts for long range work?

Upgrading the Savage is certainly the most economical, swapping a barrel is super simple.

If I had to choose I'd barrel swap the Savage. A bolt gun is going to be more accurate & like you said... cheaper. That being said, personally I would skip the 6.5 Creedmoor. They say the barrel life is under 3,000 rounds but hey... it's your coin & if you want it, you want it. You said you aren't gonna shoot it anyway, so go for it.

The biggest concern would be how quickly do you want follow up shots and how much magazine capacity do you want.

Here's how I answer this question sometimes. Go to any long range f-class shooting competition (AR platforms are allowed) and find a gas gun on the line............ Probably won't happen to often. That being said I have 204, 223, 223Imp, 260, 6.5 Creed, 308 and 6 Dasher uppers that I wouldn't hesitate to compete with if I still was shooting at Butner. They probably would not win but they would make a dang good showing if I was doing my part. As said above, it is the quality of a gas gun or any build for that matter that makes the difference. Gas guns have more moving parts, generally uncontrolled bolt slam, flex in the system, gas flow issues, lock time issues, etc. Bolt guns lend them selves to being made more accurate. When you build a gun you need to at least consider what you plan on doing with it.
