What ammo does your grendel like? I have tried federal fusion and hornady ELD match and it doesn't like either 2 moa or more at 100yds... I have read that maybe the hornady sst will give good results. Anyone tried a different ammo?

I believe the barrel I have was built by bear creek, not sure as I bought it from CA. The reviews on this barrel ( 20inch SS 1-8 with 5R rifling) are good but they seem to be using the A max or SST. what will these bullets do at long range? Just shooting steel. Will they stay accurate out to 6 or 700 yds?

Hornady 123gr. SSTs, shoot great out of both my Grendels. Steel, deer and coyotes have all experienced the SSTs, they work!

Ya. I'm waiting on the 224 valkyrie barrel to come in for a new upper for my dad that I'm putting together for him.

I may try another grendel. Looking at barrels now.... lol

I like the American Eagle predator 90 grain and the Hornady Black. Both shoot well for me

Lapua brass, 130g Bergers, BL-C(2), CCI#41, McGowen barrel. 5 rounds, one hole @100yrds, the lower hole was POI.

Are you shooting from a AR or a bolt gun?

I'm not sure who I'm going with yet on the barrel but I'm wanting a 24inch just to get the extra velocity. Not willing to spend more than $250 on a barrel atm. Hmmmmmm but I'm definitely getting a adjustable gas block as my other grendel with straight rifle gas would destroy brass...

Bill Alexander's favorite 6.5 Grendal barrel length is 19.5".
My 6.5 Grendel AR: 18” McGowen modified HBAR, dual fluted, glass beaded, hand lapped, Cryo stress relieved SS barrel; Syrac adj gas block, Mega Arms ambidextrous billet receiver set, WMD NiB BCG with AA hard use bolt, Geissele Speed NM firing group, Magpul PRS stock w/monopod, Ergo grip, Seekins 15” guard, TBAC brake/can mount & Bushnell Elite glass.
I've a second identical NIB barrel gathering dust.

Dayum, that is the sh*t! Nice set up.

I'm going today and pick up my grendel from my Smith. He wont be able to get to it for at least 2 more weeks ( has several other custom rifles in front of mine). I'm going to pick up a few more boxes of ammo to try out. Hornady sst, amax, and try to find federal American eagle OTM. All the reviews on my barrel say it will not shoot factory ELD ammo( all I can find local) but will shoot sst.... so I'm going to try! Lol plus I'm going to order dies so i can try reloading for it.

Got a seekins precision adjustable gas block installed today. I had to make a small modification ( aka the dremel came out ;) ) to my handguard but it looks good. I'm going tomorrow to test the function and get the gas block tuned and Saturday I will be going to the rifle range to test for accuracy. If none of the factory ammo I have will semi group I will be looking at getting another barrel, possibly a 224 valkyrie( have a bison armory 1-6.5 barrel coming to test out :) )

I have a Radical Arms 24" upper that I put on an AR lower. I reloaded for it and got great results using IMR 8208 XBR powder, 123 gn AMAX bullets and CCI 450 small magnum primers. It would easily shoot sub-MOA groups at 100 yards and it was a pretty damn good shooter out to 800. I could do 1000 yards without much trouble in reasonable conditions, but if there was a lot of gusty winds out there, it got squirrelly pretty quick past 800.

Cool. Why did you use magnum primers?

Research indicated that folks using them were getting better velocities with no adverse effects. It seemed logical that you'd get a more uniform ignition from magnum primers. So, I developed my loads using the 450's and they performed very well. My only caveat would be the common sense warning not to start your load development at the top of the range. Start safe/slow and work your way up to a faster node.

I got to the range today. Tried out wolf, hornady eld and sst, and federal fusion. The rifle will not group with hornady ammo. 3 or 4 inch groups at 100yds. BUT it will group with federal fusion.... most groups were right at one inch, the pic below was my best today, under a inch without the flyer

So I will be keeping the rifle. I will be ordering dies and some 120gr SMKs to try. Also I will be moving my athlon argos 6x24x50 to the grendel.

There’s a few threads on Arf, and some others report accuracy issues with Hornady ammo. Especially the Black line.

6.5 is proven accurate round. If you want to get some more accuracy out of an AR, you have to really spend some time on details of the bolt and barrel lock up, and lapping the upper receiver.

1moa or less with a gas gun is really all you can ask for.
