While at MCC I built a 700 for @Gray. Nothing I did was groundbreaking, there’s plenty of these projects out there on the internet, most notably, rifleshooter.com. He does a lot of neat projects. This rifle started out as a Remington 700p with a 20” barrel chambered in .308. I trued the threads, lug abutments, and receiver face. Installed a external bolt stop. The bolt lugs were squared up and a Badger M16 style extractor was installed. I TIG welded a straight PTG handle (funny story) on, and made a bolt knob. I had a .308 varmit profile barrel laying around that I cut both ends down, threaded, rechambered, and finished it out at 18”. I reused the original lug after I ground it to ensure both sides were parallel. I really enjoyed this project, I’ve done several so far, and had some good results. This is going to be pic heavy. I didn’t capture everything step by step with pictures, but I’ll explain everything I did as I go along. First I stripped the receiver and using a Manson 700 tooling I trued the receiver. In the kit there is a reamer, a tap and bushing that fit in the raceway. The reamer and tap have a long tail that goes into the raceway, and guide the cutting so that everything is concentric to the raceway. Once that is done, I put it in between the lathe centers with the receiver tap as a mandrel, and lightly cut the receiver face. In the picture, you may notice that there is still a bit of dykem present. This was after .002 material removed. If I remember correctly, it took .005 to square it up.

Next, addressed the bolt. Using a fixture I cut the back of the lugs, and squared the bolt face. Because I planned on installing an M16 extractor I opened up the bolt so that I could solder in a bushing. Once the bushing was installed I cut it down flush with the bolt nose, and opened the bushing to the required diameter. I placed the bolt in a fixture from Brownells and started milling for the extractor, darn if it didn’t fit. I prefer to measure 22 times and reluctantly cut once.

I’m glad @Thatguy finally got some pics of this up.

It’s a fantastic shooter and very smooth.

For the barrel, I had a varmit weight .308 that I cut down. I have been intrigued by how well shorter barrels shoot sometimes. With the barrel not doing anything I thought why not see what I can get it to do. I cut down the chamber end and lopped off a couple inches off the muzzle end. The recoil lug was ground on a surface grinder to ensure that it was flat. I removed about .006 total. Once I figured out all my measurements (the school has a handy form if anyone would like a copy) I started to rechamber it. Indicated it in a four jaw, through the head and held the muzzle in a an outboard spider. After it was chambered, I flipped it around and threaded the muzzle

I installed a PWS brake/ hider. And then used a q-tip to make sure there were no burrs on the muzzle.

I always wanted an external bolt stop so I figured I’d rather mess up my brother in law’s rifle before I tried to install one on my rifle. I got this one from PTG. My only complaint was that there was no instructions at all, so I spent the better part of a morning figuring it all out. Luckily it worked out great.

With everything put together, I sandblasted it and cerakoted it graphite black. I was able to assemble it and zero it on the range. I didn’t think it was too bad considering it was dark and snowy!

After @Gray had the rifle for a while, I installed a PTG bottom metal. The stock had to be clearanced in a few areas. Earlier in the post I talked about welding a new handle on the bolt. This bolt was from a Remington I owned. I was shooting in my neighbor’s field, and I suppose that I didn’t resize a round properly because after firing the bolt was stuck! I hit it with a rock and the solder on the bolt handle gave way a bit. I will not from now on try to reload military 7.62 brass, or beat my rifle with a rock. Because I could get credit in class, I welded a new straight handle on. Like I said there’s nothing new here in this post, but I sure enjoyed this project. I’m also glad it has a good home.

Want to do it all over again?! :) awesome project, and great description of the process. Thanks for sharing!

If you make it to WNC area pm me and you can send a few down range. He did such a fantastic job on everything. The action is hot knife in melted butter smooth. The rifle is really amazing to shoot. If I’m not mistaken, @Thatguy took it and shot a mile with it after he finished the build.

That was a different rifle, but, there was a guy there shooting an 18” .308. He had to lob them in like mortar rounds but it was making consistent hits
