Are there any issues with using a Uniflow powder measure to drop 777?

Thanks,

Catfish

I've used mine in the Lee PPM. Just make sure you get some sort of VMD conversion for volume vs weight, since all the data for 777 is volumetric

I wouldn't use a Uniflow. The Lee is pretty inexpensive and rather accurate. Or you can go old school and locate a Lyman 55. That said, the holy black is the way to go. Can't find it in your AO? Parks in Mocksville is a Goex distributor that sells to the public.

I'm finding some interweb advice with my white belt google-fu telling me to only use brass tools with BP and substitutes. I'm very curious why but there's no coherent explanation in my search results. I'd just like to know I'm handling this stuff properly and not being superstitious.

@Dave951 I think I sold you my last PPM and I don't need to load enough to warrant buying a new measure. If the wisdom of the elders is "don't use the Uniflow, you'll put your eye out kid" then I'll just use a plastic scoop and funnel for the 40 cartridges I need to load.

I only bought one pound of 777 and I use it slowly. When that's gone I'll look into the real stuff - thanks for the heads up.

Yup Catfish, that's exactly why I bought it. Since then, it's loaded a thousand or more black powder rounds.

The reason for not using a ferrous metal in a BP measure is the same reason they don't use ferrous metals in the manufacture of BP and substitutes, risk of ignition. The Lee measure and the old Lyman 55 are known to be safe with BP. Since I'm using fillers with my 1858 Smith cartridges, I've been looking at what meters well in a Uniflow since my Lee and Lyman are occupied. Being a son of the South, I've been using grits as a filler but cream o wheat meters better through a Uniflow so I guess grits are only for sausage and gravy again.

I’ve seen that you should also avoid using a plastic drop tube and hopper because of static. Is this overly cautious, I don’t know.

Most of the Lee unit is plastic as is the hopper of the Lyman 55. The Lyman 55 is rated for BP and many, many BP shooters use the Lee. If static is an issue, just wipe things down with an anti static dryer sheet. Also helps when metering smokeless as well.

Get 2 push button powder horn valves. Solder each to a brass tube cut to hold your preferred charge. Solder to the base of a tin can - not steel. MKe up a bench mount. Press top button and release. Press bottom button to fill the case or paper ctg. I'll post a pick of an adjustable style one later

I've been using the lee dipper and I'm getting pretty good at being consistent with it. I wouldn't mind tinkering together a tool though.
