I am not really a rifle shooter nor hunter but like trying to play around at the 3 to 500-yard range. I am using my 308 with limit success (probably me and not the gun). About 3 years ago I started looking at the 7mm-08 and about a year ago was thinking about the 6.5 Creedmoor.

At 500 yards which caliber would be better?

Our range was looking at expanding the 500-yard range out to 1,000 but is having issues with the wetlands. I really have no interest in anything past 500-yards. I do not want to spend the money on that quality gun and glass that would take.

6.5 or 6 creedmoor . The 7mm08 is basically a 308 with a 7mm bullet stuffed in it. The 6.5 is a 30t/c case with a 6.5mm bullet in it. In last months american rifleman there was an article on the 6.5 and they explained that the differences in the 308 case design and the 30tc were enough to increase the accuracy in the 6.5. Now thats not saying the 308 or 7mm08 are not accurate. The 6.5 hasn't been around as long as the 7mm08 but from all I've read it is one of the best right now for long range shooting. I'm looking at building a 6.5 to shoot in the same distances you are talking.

My wife's deer gun is a 7mm-08. I'm not knocking it by any means, but the answer you seek is named 6.5 Creedmoor. However, at 500yds you should be having no trouble with the .308. What's your barrel length on the .308? What glass do you have on it? How does it shoot at 100yds?

Also meant to ask if you reload? If not, you probably want to stick with .308 and purchase some decent glass with the money you would have spent on the 6.5 rifle, especially if you aren't planning to push it much past 500

^ This. No reason the 308 shouldn't work well for you at 500. Also more than capable at 1000, granted a 6.5 creedmoor would have less wind drift and drop.

Anything wrong with a 6mm Creedmore?

Here's some comparisons:

I always wanted to play around with a 7mm-08 with a heavy barrel and a good trigger. 7mm bullets have come a long way and are very accurate with high BC's. .280 (.284) bullets have won a lot of long range matches. But there is no off-the-shelf "LR" rifle in 7mm-08.

I would go with the 6.5 mainly because I own several rifles in that caliber.

My second choice would be the 6mm. And if you don't handload you need to start. That's where the fun is...really! :D

Inside 500..... any of the 3 will be fine. Slight performance edge to the 6.5, but at 500 yards..... no huge difference.

What 308 rifle, and which ammo were you using?

All will work, and choices are always nice. I skipped the 6.5 creedmoor and went to the 6 creedmoor because that's what he made for me - lol. That of course was after playing with 300wsm, 7wsm, 308, 260, 243 and god knows what else...

Settled on the 260, and 6 creedmoor for the most part, but now dabbling in the 243's again... Can't leave well enough alone I guess.

If you're not reloading, then the 308 and 6.5 creedmoor are the way to go. If you are and like to play then they are all fun and will do the job.

They'll all be similar within 500 yrds.
The 7-08 was designed for 300m silhouette pistol competition. My 7-08 rifle has performed very well in accuracy and hunting.
If you're only using it for range work, 6 or 6.5 CM, and start handloading.

At 500 yards: 6.5cm has a 53" drop from a 100 yard 0 and the 308 has a 62" drop.

Don't know the conversions between mrad (what I use, vs MOA which is what standard scopes us).

But the drop difference isn't huge. And easily calculated.

6 creedmoor with a 105gr. Berger @3k and a 100 yard zero.

No correlation what so ever. Just wanted to post that. Lol

I am playing around with the Savage Alex II in 308. I love the trigger that came with the gun. I found a SS Savage in 7mm x 08 that I was thinking about. At 400 yards it shoots better than I can shoot it. A friend proved that to me.

Madmardigan I am looking that a Boyd stock. Just not sure how I want to configure it.
