Ok, I just getting into Scotch and not sure where I want to go except I DO NOT want a peaty scotch. I have a few bottles on the shelf and looking to add another one in the mid-price range (50-80). Last night I had a pour of Aberfeldy 12, Glenmorangie "The Original" and Balvenie 14. The Balvenie at first I was not sure about but after the 3 sip, it was really good.
Here is a short video of what the store has on the shelf. Was leaning to the Balvenie 12.

I like the MaCallan 12 as and everyday drinker.

The Oban 14 is an interesting laid back sip that gets better as you drink it. It builds on the palette.

Don't go with Laphroaig 10, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Those will all be peaty.

Thanks wvsig. I have an unopen bottle of McCallan 15 Triple Cask that I bought at a scotch tasting last year. They had 5 different McCallan's and I really liked that one.
Never had any Oban. I used to have meeting on Friday night at different peoples houses and the always had some Laphroaig there and could not drink it.

Anything Macallan or Glen Livet is a great place to start.

For slightly smoker try Johnny Walker green label if you can find it.

For an every day less expensive and clean tasting whiskey just go with Jamesonā€™s.

@RR how does the Balvenie 12 compare to the 14? I would buy the 14 again but want to try something different. They did have the Glenfiddich 14 in the case (I think) and was more in the price range of the Balvenie 14.

Balvenie 12 is less sweet, more oak.

The Glenfiddich 14 Bourbon Barrel aged should be about 50-60 bucks. Blue label/tube

I just want to know what store has that good of a selection????

But to answer your question, you want to stay in the Highlands region, Glenmorangie and Glenfiddich offerings are all pretty good. Dalwhinnie maybe another worth exploring.
Auchentoshan American Oak or Triple Oaked are good as well and have a more bourbon like profile.

The Aberlour at the first of your video is also excellent. In the same wheelhouse as you are shopping, do some research on Tamdhu. A really small
Distillery comparatively that makes exceptional juice. The research is fun. Enjoy!

If I don't want peat I stick with bourbon! Laphroaig and Talisker are in my cabinet; love the Islays.
At Xmas I saw a lot of 4 mini bottle samplers in the stores and grabbed one for $15, good way to try some single malt variety on a budget. All one distillery of course.

NCMedic, that is one of the "Habersham Beverage" stores here in Savannah. They have a case up front that has more scotch, one coming close to $700.

Good recommendations here. Also, Old Pulteney is worth a try.

I went looking for the Glenfiddich 14 but it has not made it to Savannah so I ended up with the 15. There were 3 or 4 others that I was looking but this one for some reason I kept coming back to.20210215_154233.jpg

A good starter scotch is a Japanese scotch called Hibiki. There is one bottle made by the same manufacturer in your video (but different scotch) so they might have it where you are shopping. My wife who is the scotch drinker in the house likens it to sushi eating and calls Hibiki the California roll of scotch.

bottles look like those on the left. Donā€™t focus on the 17 yr which I bought a few years ago and has gotten crazy expensive. The 12 yr is best everyday but Japanese Harmony is what you find most in NC these days

also her regular scotch collection, she likes the peaty stuff ( lagavulin her favorite peaty) but also other varieties

I was reading this thread wondering if anyone was going to mention the Japanese stuff lol

I need to find more of that Nikka.... I got a bottle in Ohio a couple years ago. Really good stuff, the store that sold it to me had it marked like 50ish bucks. Wish I'd bought more.

Ive found the Japanese manner of whisky is quite good sometimes.... its just a little different.

Guys and Girls, I just had a couple pours of the Glenfiddich15 and I think that I have a problem. Did I find another rabbit hole to go down? Now I am wanting to try a bunch of different single malts. I got more bourbon than any normal person would have and was hoping that I found the end of that rabbit hole. Now this with scotch thing and to make matters even worst, Daveinclt wants me to look at Japanese scotch. One good thing happening right now is that I am not shooting much so I concentrate my shooting funds on something else......HELP throw me a rope or send me samples so I will not have to buy the whole bottle. :)

That's how it starts.

Also, only whisky from Scotland can be called Scotch. Only bubbly white wine from Champagne, France can be called Champagne. Things like this are like spelling errors to the pedantic like me and drive me to drink (or complain).

Lol, youā€™ll find the Japanese whisky above in the scotch section wearing a kilt but calling it a skirt.

Yep.... welcome to the addiction.
If you truly want to be overwhelmed, I suggest Scotch 80 Prime in Las Vegas, once you see what $3 million of Scotch looks like, you'll shed a tear.

The Costco Scotchs are pretty good for the money. I have 22 year old bottle that is pretty good.

I will add another vote for the Aberlour 12 or the Aberlour 16. They are very tasty and reasonably priced.

I called my son in Atlanta and he got me a bottle Glenfiddich 14. Will see him in a couple of weeks.

Picked up my first bottle of Suntory whisky. It is extremely mild and pleasant. It goes down smooth with no afterbite. This would be a great starter whisky for someone getting into Scotch.

Oh man I love Scotch.

If you don't want peaty, stay away from Jura.

Glenfiddich and Glenlivet would be my recommendation.
