the answers on the pistol are to my knowledge with a few 80% ar's under my belt, never done a pistol though.
1. not really, it depends on what parts and where you source them from, cheap just don't cut it
2. drill press, dremel, few files and hand tools. I do know of several polymer 80's done with just a dremel and a few files
3. build it as you wish adding the parts you feel perform the best
4. up to you to decide, the fun is in the build
5. the old reliable 1911 is out there as well as the glock, maybe others these ar the ones I have seen.

I've done an 80% Glock and I am in the process of a 1911 build
1. My Glock build cost a little less than buying a used Glock. I got lucky and was able to snag a cheap factory slide and barrel off armslist but if I had not it would have ended up costing around $450-500 instead of $380. The 1911 will end up costing about the price of a rock island or low end Springfield.
2. I did my Glock with a hand drill, dremel tool and some files. Took a little more time but I think I was able to be more precise.
3. I have fun building it. Most of the guns I build rarely get shot afterwards. I guess I should look into model airplanes, it would be a lot cheaper. Plus with 80% build you get to have a "ghost gun"
4, 5. The only pistol builds I know of are the glocks and 1911. On your first I'd recommend the Glock because it is WAY easier. I've already ruined one grip safety on the 1911.
