A1 buffer tube question

Snagged a stock off flea market table , never seen one with vent holes on side....anyone else

That's on the proximal end... no, I have never seen that. I can't think what it would be for. I am sure someone smarter than I will chime in.

It's supposed to be a drain hole; it's common with A1s, sometimes A2s. It was intended to prevent either water or air from building up in the tube.
