I am wanting to cut down a remington model 11 ( browning A5 copy). My plan is to install a cutts compensator/choke assembly on the shortened barrel. I have no idea how far back the barrels recoil into the receiver? NFA length is not a concern. I want it as short as possible, but obviously don’t want the cutts to smack the forend the first time a hot load is fired. Any of you recoiling barrel experts have any suggestions?
I found this pic online, but wonder if it’s enough…. You can manually push the barrel deeper than this setup would allow 76FB3CC4-9DC2-42C2-8042-72D255FF2C5E.jpeg

I am starting to hoard them. Wondering about parts commonality across the 3 series..

Common parts is something I don't have experience with. I do have a Remington M11 and there is some difference that I've seen compared to a Browning A5.

As for the hoarding... Sorry, most here have the same affliction. 🤷

IT'S NOT AN AFFLICTION. We're just special.

I actually just bought another one. So i may do a 13” plain barrel and a super shorty

Perhaps I am little late to this thread, but I have been tinkering with one of my Auto 5 Brownings and have a little input. It does not matter on my 3" Auto 5 whether the barrel and firearm are taken off together or the forearm taken off before removing the barrel. The same amount of clearance is needed to get the forearm separated from the barrel. It takes about 9.5 inches of forward motion of the forearm to get it clear of the barrel band. That distance would be different with a 2.75" gun since the barrel band is located differently. A Cutts would interfere with getting the forearm separated from the barrel if the barrel was so short that the distance from the back of the Cutts to the front of the barrel band was shorter than the distance from front of the barrel band to where the barrel enters the receiver. I suppose you could cut some notches in the forearm to let it be released from the barrel band.

As far as how far the barrel recoils, take out the spring and see how far back into the receiver the barrel will go.

Ok, so finally got around to cutting one down. Taking the barrel and forearm off as one piece allows for greater tilting of the forearm. The extra tilting helped get to the current length. I did have to permanently attach the vented portion to maintain 18” of barrel. I do see a short system version coming next though. I plan on starting with light loads and a rubber band around the barrel to see how far back it recoils. The rubber band should stay in the farthest forward position that the barrel slid back under recoil. Hopefully I didn’t create a 18” birdshot only gun 8F724524-1760-4F95-BBF9-9E9500170130.jpeg
