My capacitor is bad on my AC. I can't get a new one until tomorrow. I need a 45/5 370 volt. I have a 50/5 370 volt that I kept from my old unit that is practically new. Can I use it until I can pick up the correct one tomorrow? @BlackGun

I should have one on the truck or shelf if you need to come get it.
I can pick one up tomorrow when the store opens. I just wondered if I could use the 50/5 to get through today without hurting anything.

Yes, you can use a 50/5 microfarad capacitor in place of a 45/5 micrfarad capacitor.

In general, you can go up slightly in capacitance, but should stay as close as possible to the original rating. You shouldn't go down in capacitance.

The voltage rating is important, too. It, too, can be a higher voltage rating but should not be lower.

You could leave the 50/5 capacitor in permanently, but if you just want to use it temporarily until you get one to match the original, that's understandable.

I wouldn't. 5% is the tolerance

5% is the manufacturing tolerance, not necessarily the circuit tolerance.

The capacitor is used to develop the phase difference required to start the initial rotation of a single phase motor when power is first applied to the motor. Once the motor is running, it isn't needed any more.

To that end, a capacitor slightly larger in rated capacity is fine and won't hurt anything. The voltage rating should also be at least the same rating, but can also be slightly higher.
