Accidental Discharge - Drop Safety

I damned near did the same thing with an AK once... I *looked* right at the rounds in the top of the mag and all my head registered was ‘empty chamber’. Oops

So my friends, great learning opportunity here. This is kinda long. We were at the safe last night, and she was looking at the 1911's, and wanted to hold the Colt Officer's enhanced that I bought a few weeks ago. Now I have to add, last weekend we went to our indoor range to shoot, and I had loaded up a couple mags for the Officers 1911, since I didn't want to shoot much 45. Well, they were on a 45 minute to an hour wait to shoot. Yep, no go...so we came home. I didn't unload mags, but the chamber was empty, so I just put it back in the safe. Now, back to last night, @KellySue was holding all the 1911's, comparing triggers, etc, when she grabbed the Officers model. She asked if it was hot, I said no, so she pulled the slide back to check, empty, and let it back down. Luckily, I HEARD the round go in, and damn near yelled, HOLD ON. Again, luckily, she had her finger where it was supposed to be, outside the trigger guard. Now, in her defense, she's used to Glock's, where you can see a mag in, where the Colt fits flush, buuuuut, she didn't check to see if the mag was in there or not. So, I told her, no matter what I tell you, YOU always check magwell for mag first, and then chamber for a round. She's just really getting back into guns (never was super into them, but did shoot some), so this was a very eye opening, learning experience. So, never assume a gun is cold, no matter who says so. She was aiming at the clothes dryer while dry firing, we could have had some seriously ringing ears, and shopping for a new dryer possibly today.

Lesson learned, catastrophe avoided, nobody hurt, and not likely to forget.

Carry on smartly!

I keep a loaded revolver in the safe, top shelf.
everything else is unloaded, but loaded magazines are in the safe and a few on top.

But, always have a carry gun on me or sitting beside me.
