Bought an 308 upper from a guy a while back (over a year) who said it was Aero Precision. Later bought a complete Aero lower and a CDNN 308 BCG. Put it all together and shot it @5 to 10 times to make sure it all worked. It did, but the forward assist fell out after a couple of rounds. Local gun plumer (AR smith, former Army, self taught gunsmith) tries to get a pin and put the forward assist back in. No luck. Tries to modify a pin to make the forward assist into a "plug". No luck. He said the gas block was loose so he put some red loctite on it. He told me the upper was low quality and definitely NOT an Aero Precision and recommended I sell it. Said buy better next time. Easier said than done with my budget and interests.

I had planned on slapping a budget optic/scope on this and using it for Heavy Metal 3 gun 3-5 times a year and the occasional range trip. It's one guys opinion and I'll probably get another before I make a decision. Wanted to ask here, how he could tell it was low quality, just by looking at it? Is there anyone local to me (Lenoir/Boone/Hickory/Wilkesboro) that you would recommend to take another look/give me a second opinion before I decide? If I posted pics here would that help determine the quality/brand of the upper?

Thanks in advance.

My (cynical) guess... He called it low-quality because he can't fix it. How many AR10 pattern uppers has he examined in his life to be able to tell the difference?

As for the forward assist...who needs it? I never installed mine in my Aero build. Sometimes I feel like I should....then I don't.

Post good in focus closeup pics.
I agree I have 2 308 ar 10’s and like most a pile or ar15’s all have Foward Assists, and I want them there since I came up old school
But TBH I have never used them, even in the mil..

I agree he prolly as stated above (COULD NOT FIX IT)

here are some pics of my aero m5 and the upper markings. This was a full aero factory upper so should be a good guide.
The fa pin isn't actually a pin but a screw. If a pin was put in it is definitely wrong. Note that the m5 upper has a distinct recess by the fa screw as well as its housing has angles vs a traditional curve.
The forge Mark is actually an aero logo mark.
No markings on my gas block.
Apologies for the foam fuzz in the shots.

Thanks guys. I checked the barrel this morning and didn't see anything. I'll go back and look for the mark on the receiver. Someone else mentioned that by using a bolt without forward assist notches with a forward assist I may have damaged the upper....

That's one reason I'm just looking to plug the hole. If the budget bolt gives out. I'll buy better.

Unmarked upper. Think I've been had. Dang it. Now I need to plug the forward assist hole and decide what I'm going to do with it. Need to see if I can backtrack and figure out when I bought it and let him know it isn't an Aero and see what he says. Maybe he didn't know.
