FE1A21A4-D0E9-4CE3-9C10-ED5635778D1E.jpeg Installed a set of MOE handguards on my Romy and now I can’t get the upper handguard/gas tube to lock in place. The lever on the rear sight is binding and won’t go down. What am I doing wrong?

I just went through that with my yugo and a mid West industries hand guard... I basically had to play with the gas tube lever while using a rubber mallet to knock it in. I dont think you're doing anything wrong. I think the truth is, that they're all just so different even just by a little bit it's hard for one item to fit them all.

I would just tap it into place with a rubber punch mallet, But you will just have to forfeit getting the gas tube off in a jiffy at the range. Next option is shaving a little off on the rear sight block portion of the top cover if that is what is causing the tight fit. You can pretty much almost guarantee with these guns that anything but the factory wood or polymer furniture is gonna take a small amount of fitting from being too loose or slightly snug. I've never used a dremel more in my life.

I’m wondering if the heat shield is keeping it from closing. The UTG quadrail it had

I’m experienced in building AR’s, but AK’s are going to be a new ball game. I’ve owned a few in the past, but only performed basic cleaning and maintenance. Really interested in learning the ins and outs of the AK.

I just installed an ALG AKT in my yugo Npap. 4 hours of dremeling, sanding, filing, cutting, tapping, beating and cussing and it still has a funky reset for the moment. Thatll get you real familiar with it. I love how the platform is so behind that it forces you to become a better gunsmith. Almost makes you appreciate it more.

Gas tube sitting too high. Sometimes, if it's close, you can grip the upper and lower handguard together and give them a good squeeze, then try turning it down (gently) with pliers or the groove in the bolt carrier.
I've never had that particular handguard, but it could be the heatshield that prevents the gas tube from seating right.
Usually you'll get contact up front or on the back of the gas tube where it flairs out to contain the upper handguard.

If it fit before this handguard, it's the handguard. Figure out where the contact points are and dremel til they fit. Don't dremel the rifle though. That's reserved for fitting a new gas tube.

If I had it in my hands I could probably diagnose and fix in a couple minutes.

Took a punch and hammer and slightly bent the edges of the heat shield. Handguard popped in place fairly easily with a good squeeze. Thanks for the advice! Always find the help I need here.
