I'm just now starting to get into the research, but some of you guys are pretty sharp.

I noticed a roaring sound up front and figured it was probably a wheel bearing, but when I got it up onto stands they felt pretty good.

I isolated the sound to the passenger side and poked around to find this.

I've replaced the CV axle about a year ago, and if I remember correctly it slid onto a splined shaft coming out of the tranny. It looks like a bearing or something let go inside the tranny to me (where the splined shaft is), but I'm gonna read a little and sleep on it.

Have any of you master mechanics seen this and can shave some time of my research? Thanks very much!

This may help. The tripod joint housing should not move as it is now.

Just going by the “look” of things, I would say the axle is what has the issue, not the differential bearings.

Thanks man. If I have time tomorrow, I'm going to try to yank the axle and see what's funky. I hope you're right.

Truth be told, other than nitnoy bullcrap, this has been a great car.

Got the axle out. The axle and stub seem pretty solid, I'm becoming a little concerned it might be the bearing inside the transmission. I'm losing light pretty quick so ill backup 10 and punt tomorrow.

If it is the carrier bearings in the differential, that sounds kind of involved, yes?

If diff bearings, you are replacing the transmission. However, on this particular platform from GM, I have replaced countless amounts of hub/ wheel bearing assemblies. Maybe half as many got axles. Have not replaced one transmission due to diff bearings.

I should really:

A) stop assuming the worst
B) start listening to career mechanics' advice

Twas the wheel bearing (though that play in the axle still looks funky). Thanks very much!
