I was looking for a place to post some tinkering and didn't see a place that felt right so I'll start a little tinkering thread. We'll see if it sticks.

I recently picked up an FM hi-power from a forum member. It's a nice shooter, but the finger froove grips weren't my thing and the little safety was a no-go.

I've replaced the grips with no frills old school HP and fit a newer ambi safety to the gun. I didn't want the right side of the safety as it rubbed my hand so I cut down the pin and cold blued it. Much happier now.

The cold blue is ok, but I've never really gotten great results with oxpho-blue. It's not something I do regularly so maybe it's good enough.

Here's another one I've been farting around with for awhile. It started life as an express with extended magazine.

The most obvious changes are getting rid of the extended tube and going to a Hogue short LOP stock and fore end. The OEM stock must be made for a giant. This one is a little too short but makes the gun handier. Deleting the extended tube also makes the gun feel much more lively. Also added a jumbo safety.

The gun originally came with that craptastic bead blasted rustomatic blue finish. It rusted no matter what I did. Oil it and put it away and it rusted in a matter of weeks in a climate controlled closet.

So I figured I'd try Alumahyde. I wanted black but it was OOS so I went with grey. Very happy with the results, the only blemishes are at the muzzle and where the tube clamp used to reside.

I also hogged out the loading port with a dremel prior to refinishing. The port was quite sharp beforehand.

It ain't a prized wingmaster, but it's been a great travel/camp gun for going on 15 years now.

nice set up. +1 for the short hogue stock. I really like it for indoor use plus the kids can learn with it much easier. Never had any luck with alumahyde. Yours looks great though, im jealous. Nice work on the hi power as well sir, im not an ambi safety guy either.

I picked up this Mossberg 500 yesterday and the seller was kind enough to include some plastic furniture along with the wood that was installed.

Both the wood and plastic stocks left me at a nearly 15" LOP, which is just not going to work. I will likely cut down the wood soon, but I wanted to practice on the plastic first. I brought it down to 13" and it fits great now.

I also learned a few things that I'll do differently when I cut down the wood stock.

Posted this one up before.
Started life as my dad’s new Series 80 Enhanced Govt model 30 years ago. He left it to me a few years later. RIP

A couple of years ago I got rid of that duckbill beavertail and cut the frame tangs, fit an upswept beavertail, had Novaks cut the slide for their sights, and added some other bells, whistles and raccoon tails. Turned it into an IDPA match blaster.

Then in 2019 I gave it a more traditional look, but with all the improvements, and gave it to my oldest son as a graduation gift.

I had been farting around with trying to get a light on the 870.

I had an elzetta mount but it was a chunky bastard and I've repurposed the light. I don't really like most of the clamp mounts out there.

I would have really liked one of the older P60 based surefire fore ends and drop in a Malkoff but they are kind of hard to find and still spendy.

I came across this solution on some other forum in my reading and like it but not the way it was executed so I tweaked it a little. I drilled and tapped a hole into the fore end down into the hard nylon then sank a threaded insert in. Top it off with a short section of rail and then screw it down. It feels pretty sturdy, we'll see if it holds up.

Try heating the metal when you use the blueing agent. It helps.

Shortened the wood stock on the Mossy 500 and fit a Pachmayr pad. Gosh it feels so much better. I had a tee tiny bit of tear out on one side. Nothing worth bothering with. Now I just have to pick off the rubber dillies where I sanded.IMG_20210131_171107479.jpg
