so if a man was to get an AR pistol for his truck to haul around....what kind of ammo do y'all think would be a good choice to go with it? If a SHTF type situation would happen to arise and a man could use a little extra something. Just hypothetically speaking, asking for a friend.....

55gr soft points.

Or if you reload like I do. Some 60gr Vmax. Both are good for "game" if you have to walk.

Let the debate start now.....

Yeah i really dont know, soft point something or maybe 62gr green tips. Thats why i was throwing it out there...not sure

My favorite AR ammo for general purpose Self Defense is the same as what I'd use for hunting......Winchester 64gr PowerPoint, Speer 64gr Gold Dots, or Barnes TSX

One mag of soft/hollow points, one mag of steel core. You don't want to knock out a vehicle that runs and you can use to get home - if you can help it.

Good for cracking engine blocks
I actually carry 15 mags of mixed rounds under the back seat of the truck. I've got 55 grn Federal .223, 55 grn XM 193, and M855. I also carry 200 rounds of 230 grn ball .45 and 200 rounds of 9mm 115 grn ball, 500 rounds of .22 LT and 500 rounds of .22 WMR, 200 rounds of .22 subsonic and 100 rounds of 7.62 147 grn ball. You just never know.

Thats what@nonamehavei tried to tell me too
I'd listen to him. Spend some money on ammo testing out the gun then hope like heck you NEVER need to use it. That way the sting of 300blk won't hurt so much.

He has been urging me to get into reloading and that would definitely help out with the cost of the 300 blk...i just cant seem to pull the trigger on it got a press but have never used it

Lead balls have been delivering dirt naps for 500 or so years. I bet casting (maybe even buying cast) can get the 300 cheaper than 5.56, course amortizing all the junk that goes with it might take a while.

In .223/5.56 if loading the 60gr Vmax gave the most accurate results I've managed and quite devastating on soft tissue, is/was available factory loaded in the TAP line. You can also search around for various bonded bullets in the 62/64gr range Speer, Fed, Win, and Nosler have them loaded or component, the Barnes bullets are good too but long as hell and accuracy is rifling dependent. Hornady 55gr soft points are an affordable option. Personally I keep Vmaxs, 55 fmj, and green tip in my loaded mags. Have been thinking about adding or switching to one of the bonded though.

Whatever you choose, you might want to rotate your ammo out on a regular basis.

One fellow up in Alaska kept a box of .44 Mag in the glove box of his truck. Most powders for .44 Mag are relatively slow burning, but his rode in the glove box for roughly 50k miles in his estimation.

All that bouncing over rough roads was like putting loaded rounds in a tumbler for a long, long time. Over time, it broke up the extruded powder making a very fast burning powder that blew up his gun.

It might not be an issue at all if all your driving is on smooth, paved roads, but it's something to bear in mind.

Whatever your gun runs well. In NC, pretty much any of it will get the job done. Some slightly better than others but probably not worth worrying over.

75gr. OTM or Hornady TAP and similar design.
Due to the lowered velocity of shooting a pistol length gun. But, these rounds work at the reduced velocities. Actually, I like these rounds all the time.

Did you say suppressed sbr?

Oh wait, you said pistol AR.

They sort of rhyme, so I had to double check.

Gross. :p
