I spent last week working with a Rockwell Automation Engineer from Switzerland. As happens many times with Europeans that I work with, the conversation one evening turned to US politics. He said he mostly liked Trump which did not surprise me. When the conversation turned to Liberals and Conservatives is when it became interesting. He said that the Europeans think of Liberals as people with open minds that think others have a right to live their lives as they choose within reason. He said that what we call Liberals, they call Socialists.

I have had this same conversation with Europeans before, and have gotten similar responses. It's almost as if their idea of a liberal borders somewhere near what we refer to as libertarians. BTW... If you speak with him again, tell him to get their software fixed, so Windows and antivirus software doesn't break it so easily, and so it will coexist with Siemens software, without having to run 20 virtual machines...lol...

Liberals used to be covered by that definition in the United States. When Progressives arrived on the scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they went about their business much as they do today, advocating for socialism/collectivism.

The term progressive became toxic politically, so they co-opted and usurped the name.

Libertarians wouldn't be a thing if the progressives hadn't shit upon the term Liberal (you will still find many Liberty minded folks who refer to themselves as Classic Liberals to make the distinction).

And therein lies the power of propaganda and psychological warfare. Appropriation of existing terms and ideas to obscure and misdirect meaning and perception.

I once knew someone who worked for the Psychological Battalion out of Bragg. He was rather proud of some if their work. Making things seem different than they really are. My favorite phrase has always been, Target Rich Environment. ;)
