Was up on my property in Virginia this weekend and saw this animal for the 2nd time. I have tried to get pictures but he is FAST!!! Thought it was a wesal because of the shape of his head but his legs are too long, although the head sure looks like one. He stands about 24" tall - is about 36" log with a bushy tail at least 12". Has a silver-grey coat. Anyone got any ideas? Doesn't have fox head , ears are too close to head -muzzle is not right for fox. Not a yote -I have seen a lot of them. Just thought I would ask -Thanks! Will try and get pictures if I see him again!!

I hunt in va. In va game and fisheries hunting regulations book it mentions fishers and has an article on them spotted there. I belive rdinatal post is possibly same article. I've not picked up new hunting book for 2020-2021 but I'll look for it.

Looks like a Damn Yankee Fisher...

Fishers are marauders... they travel through the woods at a pretty fast pace, wandering around, basically depending upon happening upon prey before the victim knows they are near. Their territory covers a few square miles as a result.

My first thought was an otter as well but I wasn't aware of the presence of fishers in VA. Would be great if you could get it on a game camera. I would go back and saturate the place with cameras since you have already seen it twice.

All are good ideas - and the head and ears are definitely right for a fisher. What has me stumped is the legs are much longer than in those pictures -and can they be silver -grey in color? I am going to set up some trail cams and will post if I get anything. He seems to hang out near the workshop -which can be gotten under. He may have decided to camp out under there. Thanks for the thoughts -he is a strange one for sure!

Could be -she might not like me taking a look under there if that's the case.
lol yeah she'd probably get testy over that.
I've taped a flashlight on a broomstick and shoved it under stuff looking for critters. Put the flashlight on strobe.

I've confirmed that, Yes, they are long legged, and, Yes, they can be silver-grey in color.

Here's one a friend of mine has been watching this week, in Wisconsin. Look at the color of his face:

Didn't see him this past weekend when I was there, but I've got trail cams set up -so maybe I will get some pics -but that does look at a lot like him.
