This thing landed on our window. I'm not familiar with it. It's on a crossbar, so I have an upper and a lower pic.

Yup. Dobson Fly. The adult stage of the helgramite, which is the larval stage of the Dobson Fly.

One of our property borders is a creek that feeds into the Haw River, which as the crow flies is about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile through the woods from where I'm typing this. We get 4 or 5 a year camped out by our kitchen door. Which is the side of the house that faces the creek. Based on the pincer length, that one is a female. Males have pincers about an inch or more long. The males look scarier but from what I understand they can't generate enough leverage on those long pincers to give you a decent bite. But the females can from what I've read and heard. Never experienced it personally.
