Hopefully, this doesn't become something about which I routinely post.

In September 2015, I had a Sig 1911 stolen from me at the Hickory gun show. It was a special 5.11 edition, LNIB, box, papers, three factory mags that had the 5.11 logo on them, too. The thief took the gun, but left me the box, papers, and two of the factory mags. That made the police report easy, as I didn't have to scramble to find the serial number in my files.

Fast forward to July 3, 2017. I received a phone call that my gun had been found by the sheriff's office in a traffic stop about 12 miles from the house. It was in the possession of a convicted felon, who also had a quantity of weed in his car.

I won't bore you with the details, but I've been calling the DA's office and Sheriff's office since then trying to get a hard answer on getting my gun back. I wasn't so much asking for a when, I just wanted a commitment that I WOULD get it back and it wouldn't be destroyed or auctioned off after the trial. I got bounced back and forth between them and got really frustrated.

Last week, I called the DA's office again and they released the pistol from evidence. Took a couple tries to get up with the evidence folks at the sheriff's office, but I got the pistol this morning. It no longer looks new - not even close, but it looks better than I expected it would. It came back to me with a Kimber magazine, rather than the special edition Sig magazine it left with, and 8 rounds of CCI Blazer .45 hardball. LOL.

So, now I have a good excuse to make this a regular carry gun. It was too pretty to do that before. And, I have a couple cool evidence bags to keep with it for when I tell the story. I'm just happy to have SOMETHING back for the obscene amount of money I paid for it back in the day.

And, as a sort of epilogue, the perp who had it is habitually in trouble around here. From what I have gathered, he was arrested for yet another felony after getting out on bond for the charges related to his being found with my gun. There seems to be a pattern here....

Glad you got it back. What'd it cost to be refinished?

I don't know. It is a cerakote finish to begin with, so I could just have it cerakoted again. However, there are some dings in the metal that couldn't be bead blasted out, so it would never look new again, with close inspection. I'll probably just leave it like it is.

Looks just fine to me! Good story, glad you got it back.

Congrats on getting it back; when i read the post i expected far worse than the pic shows. As you say, no reason not to put it in the carry rotation now; it's had its cherry popped....

@cubrock

Thanks for posting this. I too had a handgun stolen and recovered on a convicted Felon in a traffic stop. I am currently getting the run around by the recovering PD of when I can get my property back. It was recovered in Oct 2017 when I originally spoke with the recovering PD evidence person they stated they should be able to release it by Q1 2018. I called again in mid March and the same person stated they did not know when they would be able to release it.

I have not contacted the county DA (Wake) about returning my property, yet.

Aside from being polite, persistent, and showing up in person (my next move) at the PD holding my property do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

I am glad you got it back! The adventures this 1911 went through alone, make it a keeper. I will admit, I would like to have a 5.11 Sig.

Polite, persistent, show up in person. Don't know if being an election year helps, given our DA is running for reelection. Maybe try writing your DA with some quotes from her campaign's website about protecting the public and remind her of your right to property.

I can tell you that the wheels of justice grind slowly in NC (a quote from the DA's office when I called them last year). It can take years for such a case to make it to court if it doesn't get pleaded out.

Thanks for the advice! I highly doubt this case will ever see trial. I believe the felon made bond and has since skipped town.

Sheriff department and DA department in Catawba County hate each other. Known fact. Both incompetent. Watch the news tonight on the Catawba County election if you haven’t been following the SBI investigations and our elections. Training Day 2, The Sequel.

Had a Glock 26 stolen in July of 2013 in Matthews. Fortunately the Matthews detective stayed on top of things and let me know a year later Charlotte PD had recovered it in a felony traffic stop. Never heard a word from Charlotte but stayed on top of it and finally got it back in early 2017.

Oddest thing was the pickup of the gun when it was finally released. I asked to put the gun back in the evidence box for carrying it back to my truck a few blocks away. They declined and said I needed to make sure the cable lock stayed on and gun and the gun was visible until I got to my truck. I didn’t feel real comfortable walking around in downtown Charlotte with a pistol in my hand so stuck it in my pocket as soon as I got out of the building.

Glad you finally got it back. My brother had to get a lawyer to file some kind of formal property return docs to get his released from evidence.
The guy that stole his kept skipping court.

Hope there is no body counts on the recovery guns.;)

Glad you got it back... I was surprised when you said he has ALREADY been arrested again, after getting arrested with your gun and drugs in his car. Who thought it was a good idea to let the sum beach out on bail? It's like they were hoping he'd just get arrested again. What if he had killed somebody after they let him go on bail?

We have a back log of DWI trials of like 70 in my county. Then the serious stuff murder sex offenses take 3-5 years.

See my other stolen gun thread about the gun thief who keeps getting out on bail only to steal more guns.
