Any of y'all bought tires lately? - Rant

Back in the late 90's I bought a set of tires for a pickup at Sears. They were overpriced, and the techs snapped off one of my lugs, but managed to get the nut onto the half a thread that was still left. It fell off a few days later. No luck getting them to replace the lug.

Since then, the majority of my tires have come from Braxton Tire in Hillsborough. They've always treated me right, and they've handled the tires for my last 3 cars.

On the mustang, I tend to replace the tires two at a time. The factory recommended tires for the car are every expensive, so the tech helped me to select a lower speed rated tire (150) with good treadwear characteristics for a lot less. I will never exceed the speed rating of this tire, so I'm good.

I'm not brand loyal when it comes to tires. I do like to stick to known brands though, just for peace of mind.

I only buy Michelin, and I only deal with Discount Tire. Any company that will fix anyone's tire no matter if you bought them there or not is a good one.

Ask my boss, who traveled to 6 different places on a Monday during business hours to see if anyone could fix a leaking tire on his rental car. SIX DIFFERENT PLACES said they couldn't help him.

Finally he had to speak to a manager at the Pep Boys who made the worker take 10 minutes (worker was trying to slack off 30 minutes before closing time) and fix the damn tire.

Oh and the Michelin Premier tire is MOST excellent, high performance for a AS tire, as well as decent life and a great ride. Worth every penny.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—After Sean Spicer’s abrupt resignation Friday morning, President Donald Trump has chosen InfoWars chief and renowned conspiracy theorist Alex Jones as the new Press Secretary, the White House announced.
The fiery Jones wasted no time getting in front of the cameras, holding his inaugural press conference shortly after the announcement.

“I am the new Press Secretary!” he bellowed in his distinct Texas growl at all the reporters present, occasionally taking a handkerchief out of his pocket to dab perspiration from his red face. “AAAAAaaaaaaAAAAAAHHHHH!” he continued, beating his chest like a gorilla.

“We’re comin’ for ya globalists! 1776 will commence, you wicked, wicked devils!” he added, before mumbling something about gay frogs.

Press Secretary Jones concluded the conference early, dismissing every person in the room after announcing that only InfoWars and Breitbart reporters would be allowed to attend press events from this point forward.

These were the last tires I bought for the cruiser.

Dirt. Cheap.

$334 *shipped!* set of 4

No complaints after putting 60k on them and still going strong

I just got a quote on 4 Falken Wildpeak AT3W size p275/55r20 and alinement for $1004

I think its a smoking deal for 55,000 rated mile tire. I have a set now at 56,000 + i have at least another 10,000 to go before replacement
Those are a great tire for the money, or maybe at any price. I have a set on my 4WD F250, and they are smooth-riding, quiet, and they get me in-and-out of the CMS landfill slopfest with a 14' dump trailer with no drama (trailer weight 13,000# loaded, 3500# empty).

My local indy tire shop, Summey Tire in Stanley, got me OTD for less than $900 for a set of P275/70-18's, while also changing out the stock 4" rear lift blocks for a pair of 2" (old man leveling kit).

@chiefjason , check out these tires for your truck before you buy.

Asked the dealership to give me some quotes on tires, wasn't a quote under $800, tires are currently filled with Nitrogen, asked about that, $300 extra, not even a kiss.

You gotta be f*ing kidding, right?

The concept behind nitrogen filled tires is sound but not worth the cost. Just air up every few months like the rest of us.

Costco offers it for free with any tire install plus you can also top off there any time if you bought your tires there. I wouldn’t pay extra for it but if they’re going to give it to me for free sure.

For me one of the biggest problems with getting tires on nicer cars is having guys who are installing them damage your rims. I have seen some nasty damage done by careless shops.

I freaking hate buying tires. My knee-jerk reaction is that there must be, like, a 1,000% mark-up. Over $700 for sh***y tires that start to get slick at 50K miles. I am a middle-class worker drone, I can't afford >$1K for Michelins.

You can breath that tire air should you end up underwater, the nitrogen will not save your life.;)

I'm wondering why the hate towards the Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza line...

I had them for my Avalanche and Silverado and loved them.

I put them on my F150 which is mainly a on pavement truck and so far so good. They are quiet and have decent road manners. I got them at Costco. $831 on the car with nitrogen, hazard warranty, lifetime rotation and balance.

I spent several years working for Bridgestone/Firestone. I have the Alenzas on my wife's Suburban and they are not going to get full life in miles, but they are going on about 6 years (she only drives about 9 miles a day, if she leaves the house at all some days). They are very nice tires.

The OE tires in general are soft. In replacing them for customers, they come with a 0 mile warranty, and basically what the dealer says is what Bridgestone will say, because there is no warranty. Bridgestone in general is a softer tire as is, so the OE tire is very soft. They have a polyester belt in them which makes them so soft.

I havent had to buy tires since I left Firestone, but my truck is going to need some within a year. Probably going to get some cheaper tires, the truck is a rough rider to the point I am jealous of covered wagons, so I am not going to get any benefits of spending more. For the Suburban, I am going to probably look at Coopers, a decent tire for it to be passed down to the oldest boy.

I have a truck exactly like that. I had coopers at3 IIRC that did make a difference. Same boat though in needing tires soon.
I'll order a cheap set off Ebay and ride along

I could only get the tires I wanted for the price I wanted at NTB. They did good on the install and balance BUT THAT'S IT.

The alignment was garbage and my TPMS sensors are all screwed up now. Went back and made them do the alignment again... it's a little better but not perfect.

Emailed their customer service but haven't heard anything in almost 2 weeks. ill happily pay the $$$ on the items they got right but want a refund on the items they got wrong.

If any of you guys can help me make this happen id appreciate it lol. Give you some unused nylon bore brushes or something!

In my experience you would be well ahead to have the alignment done elsewhere before you try to make a claim if you think its "off".

Did you pay on a credit card? If you did dispute the charges. They will take them off your account and fight the merchant. With proper documentation you will win. Done

Go get an alignment somewhere else and show them that it is off, and that would be your arguement to get a refund. Just my recomendation.

Speaking as an engineer, unless you're on the track where every little bit actually counts, and you're driving skills actually are up to taking advantage of said benefits as well under those specific circumstances, nitrogen filled tires are a complete and total waste of money.

This is, in short, the current "Slick-50" gimmick of the day. It's nothing more than performance-hype designed to siphon more money out of your wallet into the hands of tire salesmen than miles per gallon in gas savings or any other actual benefit.

Think "Scotch Guarding" your new car seats by the dealer when the seats come from the factory that way anyway.

The fuel savings they tie to nitrogen is an absolute lie. A tire filled with air traveling down the highway only changes by a few pounds and makes no difference in mileage.

My guy only carries the Falken Wildpeak HT. Any experience with those? @JBoyette @Stobie

Yes i am 60,000 on 55,000 mile tires. Rotation every 10000 since installed. I have another 5-10k left on them before i buy a second set. Love them. Not a loud humming tire on pavement, rides smooth, great traction in snow, mud and dirt trails.

I say do it

Had some Michelin’s on my 2013 Toyota Avalon from the factory and got about 100,000 highway miles on them. Burned through some Bridgestone’s in about 30k. Just bought some Goodyears for about $700 or so. Hoping they are a happy medium.

Just talked to my guy about the Falken Wildpeak HT P265 70/R16 $123 each installed plus tax. He can get them the next day. Going to have the truck re shoed after the 4th. He also seemed to like the tires too.

Mine are the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W p285/45r22. But the brand is great.

I'm running a smaller tire too but I think he quoted that one at $7 more. He said yours are more all terrain. I got on dirt roads a bit but not enough to worry about it. And a few snow days a year. Seems this might be a less aggressive tread all season from the looks of it.

Agree,

My work requirements mean snow, storm, flooding, i stay at work or drive in no matter what.

So a 4x4 with clearance, tires and other tools are part of the planning.

when i had my 2011 WK2 jeep grand cherokee, installed Falken Wildpeak 17" @ 48k miles. Traded it @ 80k, no problem with those tires and had plenty left.

my 2015 WK2 JGC with 20's... few months ago needed new tires @ 52k, was dead set on Michelin Defender in larger 275/55/20, got hit with 860 turn key...
but there was a deal on "overrun" kuhmo ht51's in same size... 139 each turn key... they've about 8k on them now and i seem 'happy' will see at 30-40k on them...
(reported these were common OEM tire and an over-run, therefore the 'deal'... was just too easy to not spend that additional $ on Michelin...
your results may vary.
as do mine.
