I am considering building a 6.8 SPC pistol upper to use as a woods gun this deer season. I shoot a lot of 6.8 and would like to avoid getting into another caliber. From what little research I have done the 6.8 preforms decently out of short barrels. I am not planning on shooting subs/using a supressor so see no benefit of going the 300 Blk route.

Barrel length? The sweet spot for the 6.8 in a short barrel is 12.5. Velocity fall off compared to the 16-18” isn’t terriable but is noticeable. At 12.5” 90gr GD are only going 2400ish +/- 50 FPS which is still plenty at 100-150 yards

Thanks for the info. To be honest I had not gotten that far in planning. I saw Bison that Armory has a sale on 8" and 11.5" barrels which got the wheels rolling. I figured velocity loss would be a concern with the 8" barrel but wasn't sure how significant it would be.

Can’t go wrong with Bison barrel. I have nothing but ARP barrels and Harrison (owner of ARP) said at one point the 12.5” barrels where a good comprismise. You’ll look at another 25-50 FPS lost with the 11.5 which personally would be the shortest I would go. That will still you enough velocity to shoot the heavier stuff like accubonds and SSTs. If you hand load then the cavity back bullets will be a good choice

He has a mean looking 190gr for subsonic for 300bkk that expands and acts like a broad head.

Good enough. My 6.8 has a Bison 20" SPR barrel and is one of my favorite rifles.

I have a 12" Bison BSP barreled SBR. I'm assuming you already have a registered lower? I do run it suppressed, but not with subs.

If you're anywhere near Charlotte, you're welcome to give it a try.

I appreciate the offer but I am about three hours outside Charlotte. The upper would be going on a pistol lower so no need to register.
