By sheer happenstance, I purchased a new Vepr FM AK-47 literally an hour before news of the Treasury ban broke a couple weeks ago.

Finally got to shoot it yesterday and whoa buddy, this thing is sweet. Very first shot was at a steel plate at 100 yards, and I was rewarded with a gratifying "ping." Irons were dead-on right out of the box and frankly, the Vepr is so consistently accurate it's almost boring. Almost. And speaking of boxes, this is hands down the nicest AK I've ever opened up at the FFL. Fit and finish are second to none. Shoutout to @TSConver and his wife at Carolina Smoke & Guns for the transfer.

Anyone else here have a Vepr FM or other variant in any of the offered calibers? What are your thoughts? Any upgrades/changes you've made to yours? I may add a brake, but the felt recoil was no different than any of my other AKs. At risk of sounding like a fanboy, this thing is damn near perfect as is.

Always wanted one but never got around to picking one up. Glad you like it.

The only downside I'm aware of are the proprietary extractors, same with the SGL's. Russia does its own thing I guess.

What do you think of the added weight?

It's slightly noticeable but not nearly as much as I had assumed, nor read about elsewhere online. It's not tiring by any stretch. I brought a Saiga and a WASR with me as well, and while the Vepr comes in a few ounces heavier, it's also clearly built far sturdier.

I had one in 7.62x39 with the type 2 sights. I installed bullet guide and set it up for muzzle device, but in the end I hated those sights. I also didn't care for the extra weight, little as that was.
They are very well built rifles though.

AK's don't need cleaning rods. You don't have to clean them. I saw it on Youtube.

So I'll revamp this thread vs starting a new one. I had put a Vepr on layaway with Circle 10 AK back in June. They had a no interest, no fee layaway so I took advantage of it to get my first AK. While it was in layaway jail of course they were added to the import ban. I picked mine up yesterday and I love it. Already planning the upgrades now!

Just wait until you shoot it! Great photo and nice Chicom flatback, too  Not too shabby for an AK newbie!

One forewarning, if I may. You think rabbits multiply? Just wait...

Yea I can see the appeal. I was always told if you're gonna do something do it right! I was lucky I got this ordered before it was unobtainium.

No kidding, and same here. And kudos to Circle 10 for honoring the pre-ban layaway terms. There was a lot of madness and some price gouging right after the announcement.

Gotta be a pretty cool feeling to watch your gun automatically increase in value by 40% or so while you're still making payments on the original price.

Yea I'm glad they did as well. They're good people. Ironically this is one of the guns I've paid retail for and it's well worth the price, especially when I got to watch it increase 40% like you said lol
