Does anybody have information on the public range at Uwharrie? The one you drive past on your way to the ohv trails?

I have tried to find info on it a few times and never had any luck. Tried to call the wildlife offices near by and never get thru to anybody.

I have almost nowhere to shoot. I was going to the wake range that is now closed. Triangle shooting academy is an hour drive + range fees. Can't afford a membership at private locations... I just want to shoot my guns!

Even though it's almost an hour and a half away if I can go to the public Uwharrie range for free that's one of my best options right now.

Is it open year round or is it seasonal? And are there specific hours?

If anybody knows I would really appreciate some info.

Been there many times.
Pick up the day pass at El Dorado Outpost.
85 yard rifle range. 25 yard pistol.
Very safe: strict range rules enforcement.
They should have the sound damping material under the cover by now too.

It is a good place to shoot. Weekdays are less crowded and therefore a better experience. Give it a try.

BTW, NCWRC may be taking over public operations at the Wake Co. range and looking to re-open to the public 3/15.

Do I need to actually buy a pass for the range? I'm used to having to buy one to ride the ohv trails.

Any idea how much it costs? The ohv tag is $5. Thanks.

All NCWRC ranges are staffed. All are free (with exception to Uwharrie as the range is on National Park Service property and the feds want a piece).

I should have read the link before my last post. It answered my questions. Thanks for the help! Will probably go this week.

Great spot.

100 yard rifle range and 25 yard handgun range (8 lanes each, IIRC). RO on duty (Rick is usually in duty when I have been there and he’s a damned good dude). They have target stands.

Like @fishgutzy, I get my range pass at Eldorado Outpost. It’s a long drive for me, as well, but it’s UNF so to me, it’s worth it.

It's not much further then the more expensive places I'm looking at. If I ride my bike out there it won't cost much in gas.

I guess the real question is how many guns can I fit on an xr650?

You don't the OHV pass to go to the range. Just follow the dirt road.
When I had a built Rubicon i did get the OHV pass. Had a blast. Tested the new skid plate kit [emoji1].

How much can you strap to the seat and a backpack?

Yes. RSO ensures a safe experience for all.

After years of the Laotian wild wild west you mean. I have not been there since it reopened, and the last time some idiots on the end of the rifle benches were speaking Hmong and throwing SKEET and shooting them with shotguns over the berm. I packed up my crap and GTFO.

That's when I started looking to build my own private range ;)

Yup. Safe place now. No more household goods allowed for targets.
Only standard paper/ laminated based targets.

UWharrie is a National Forest, part of the Department of the Agriculture.
National Park Service is Department of the Interior.
Park Service would never allow a chootin' range on their property!

This (which was yer point) is true. ;)

/pedantic nitpickin' mode off

The road in is dirt/stone and varies over the course of the year as it's scraped and weather affects it. Lots of potholes so don't drive in something that drags over speed bumps.
I mostly remember really bad washboarding on those roads. Expect to have a new rattle or two on whatever you drive in there.

Next time you go , let me know.... Ive never been.

I went to shoot there today and had a good time. Only a few people there when I showed up. Stayed for a long time and eventually had the whole place to myself. The RSO was really nice. I think I paid $7 and because it was slow there was no time limit. Bit of a bummer that it's such a drive but I'll go back for sure.

I’ve shot there a bunch and it’s a great range.

I would also suggest checking out “The Range Complex” in Autryville (near Fayetteville) the 100 yard range is $12 an hour, they have target stands and everything else you’d expect at a range, you can shoot rifles & pistols and they have 6-7 benches and 8-10 standing lanes.

I spend most of my time there at the 600 yard range. They have steel from 200 to 600, a silhouette and a 10” plate, the shooting positions are covered and they have 5-6 benches and 4-5 prone positions to shoot from, the range is open Friday - Sunday and it’s $20 an hour, a little high but it keeps people from camping out and sitting around talking your ear off.

They offer a small selection of drinks at the office but I would take your own drinks & snacks, they do have porta John’s as well.
