I`ll be there Wed/Thurs of that week shooting in the Vintage Sniper, Garand, Springfield, and Vintage Military matches

I'm hoping to make it, but honestly I'll consider myself lucky if I can make the last day of the 2400 AGG and the EIC match

Will they be bringing the store with them?

The website says: "CMP Sales will be at the event with a limited supply of rifles." I know when I was there in 2016, they only had like 6 -7 regular rifles (other than a couple of M1D's and some drill rifles) and there were 25-30 people already waiting in line 2 hours beforehand. Needless to say, the rifles were all gone in under a minute. I don't know how many they had last year, as I had surgery and missed it. I would think they would have a better supply this year, but I suspect that unless you are there in line a couple of hours before they open sales, you probably have little chance of getting anything better than you can order from Anniston without the hassle.

I am probably gonna try to shoot a couple of relays on Friday.

Probably going to regret it, but I'm shooting 3 relays Thursday.,... 2 with 30-06 and 1 with 8mm Mauser. I'll be a sore puppy on Thursday night lol

I am just going to shoot 2 relays with the Garand, I think. I was gonna try to shoot one with my Swedish Mauser, but I have not gotten used to that rifle yet. Now, I just have to figure out how to shoot offhand in the next 2 weeks...

I got a sweet shooting Swede........where do I go to see the courses?,,,,,,,,,,Butner matches have a website?......aint shooting the Garand cuz i'm selling it.

Basically, the course of fire for as-issued matches is 30 rounds at 200 yards as follows:

1) 10 rounds slow prone (+ 5 optional unscored sighter rounds) in 15 minutes,

2) 10 rounds rapid fire prone in 80 seconds.

3) 10 rounds slow standing unsupported in 10 minutes.

My hurdle is what to do for a sling on the k98

Do you not have a K98 sling, or do you find that the stock sling is unsuitable? My only problem with shooting my K98 is just that I have a metric crap-ton of the old hot Turkish 8mm that I shoot, and it'll beat the crap out of your shoulder really fast.

I`ve got an original, but I like to shoot with the sling dang near cutting my circulation off. Not real easy with a stock k98 sling in the standard mount

I've been using a cotton sling on my Garand. I am told that the leather sling works better, but the repro leather sling I have kinda sucks.

How are the rules for slings being "factory?" Are they supposed to be original style or they can be whatever you want as long as they attach to rifle somehow?

I think as long as it's a M1903(07?) type sling you can mount it as you want on a foreign rifle. All US rifles must mount in original location

Everyone needs to shoot this match at least once. I ended up with a silver in the Garand match. That made up for my embarrassing slow fire standing in the Springfield match, and my first ever crossfire in the modern military match, lol . Great day on the range.

At the awards ceremony this evening, the CMP director announced that since last Friday, competitors had fired over 63,000 rounds of ammunition!

I checked in today and was admiring the field grade Winchesters on the sale table right as they were closing. I started looking at the welded drill rifles and there was one that was so dirty, it was nearly black. But it appeared to be a birch stock with some figure underneath. It was so filthy and rusty (and a drill rifle) that I was gonna pass on it, but they kept badgering me about it and finally talked me into buying it. I am mighty glad they did.

It had a decent SA trigger group and an uncut WW2 SA op-rod inside. But the best part was that when I got home, I cleaned the grease and crud off of that dirty black stock and found this underneath:

Ahhh...you're the one who bought it. Good job!! Several of us looked at it this morning. I wish I'd have pulled it apart now, lol

They said a number of people had looked at it hard and passed. It really was just a rusty trainwreck to look at (as you saw), but I thought that birch would probably look pretty good underneath the crud. I was not expecting it to be that good underneath, though. Sadly, I do not think I will be able to sneak up on a set of matching handguards for it.

What did you think of the "Hackberry" wood stocks on the Turkish Garands? Looked like someone splashed walnut stain on poplar to me, lol.

Yeah I passed on the rifles today...I really don't NEED another garand.... the WW2 guns looked nice and new however...

Taking tomorrow off then back on Saturday for Vintage and Modern. Wrapped up Sniper, Garand, Carbine and Springfield already.

The grain looked okay, but that color was so off/weird, they almost looked like they were made of plastic from a distance. I wonder what one would look like if you completely stripped it down, then went with a reddish stained, hand rubbed BLO finish - it might be okay. But I do know I would rather get repro CMP wood over the Hackberry.

It was very hot out there today. I think I drank a gallon of water and it was not enough.

Yeah, I followed that in rapid with a 95/100 - 2X. I shoot a late serial# H&R Garand. It is a hammer. Sadly, I am still learning standing unsupported. I improved a lot, but just could not put it all together at the same time. Learned some new things though, so at least I can improve.

Not too shabby! Lock in the breathing!

What rifle?

I just finished packing up to leave at 5am in the morning so I'll be around all day.

Probably be in OD green pants and orange CMP shirt...grab me if you see me...

Good luck! I am not gonna be there tomorrow. Pack plenty of water and sunscreen. It was hot and windy today and it put me in my place late in the afternoon.

I know that feeling..I'm just getting back into the competition game...breaking off a lot of cobwebs...

I was using a 4.2 SA I built with a Danish kit from the late 90s..has a mint VAR barrel. It really hammered the right side of the 10 ring...1 click left and it hammered the LEFT side of the 10 ring...grr...just couldn't get the hold I needed to pick up the Xs...

May tweak the front sight this summer...lol

They put out some more International Harvesters today. All had CMP wood and there were 3 left, last I saw.IMG_20180504_163227.jpg

They did have 3 WW2 correct grade SA's. But at $3000+, that is much too rich for my blood.

Good scores guys.. I shot my 5.4 H&R yesterday and forgot that it shoots dead zero in slow fire, but stuff a clip in it and it shifts 2" high and right. Might be the way I hold it and it's recoil pattern, damnifino. Been that way since I built it. Thankfully I glanced at the screen and was able to salvage an 87. Ended the Garand match with a 99/87/87 for a Silver 273-3.

Shot the Springfield match with an original 03 with it's '28 barrel. Went 93-2 and 92-0, then got to standing and had a brain fart 64-0 including 1 big MISS at the top of the screen.

Third n last for me was MM with an old AR15A1... The 55gr bullets and 12:1 barrel didn't like the gusts to 25 on Thursday, and I was so give out by then that all I was doing was sending 35rds downrange to get it over with, lol
Ready for next year!!
