This past weekend i took a private class at Apex Defense group. The only prior formal training i have had is the CCW and NRA basic classes. I was asked to bring 350 rounds, i brought a case.
When i arrived it was 23 degrees. I was met by Steven, who is an aspiring instructor, and shortly thereafter Ryan, who runs the class, both are young guys and i am not. We proceeded down to the range area and I got prepared. I informed them I shoot far more than the average shooter but it is all indoor range time as I have gotten back into shooting in the past year or so. I average about thousand rounds a month, however, I have very little experience with rapid reloads, shooting and moving, drawing and shooting, etc.. I was looking to up my game a bit.
We started off shooting small circles at fairly close range with the goal of tight groups. I was a little off, but in my defense i was a bit nervous and it was well below freezing. We then proceeded to go on a whirl wind of drills, instruction and shooting. I had an absolute blast. Did i mention it was cold?
I learned enough that it will take a month or two to absorb and drill. I learned i need a shot timer. I went in expecting only to learn entry level foundation building skills, but was able to progress at my own pace as they saw what skills i had and were able to push forward to the next level. I think this is a distinct advantage of a private class over a cookie cutter Level 1,2, 3 type class. It was very affordable and 100% worth it. I ended up shooting 850 rounds... I smiled much of the time and cussed some of the time. For me it was a great time and I don't have those a lot.
Later that evening, my arms were sore, i had a few dings, and slept soundly. The class has invigorated my desire to get better and to hone the things i worked on. It also makes me want more training! My two cents
