I am leaning towards the AR platform. Not knocking "CommieBloc" weapons though. What are your thoughts/opinions on this subject?

@JBoyette, "Red" is just a nickname. At any rate thanks for the reply. If I was going into combat it would be a tough choice but I would have to go with the AR. Although the AK does tend to take more abuse.

I sold all my ak' s during the last assault rifle scare and moved exclusively to the ar platform, the plus of the ar platform are the ease accuracy at longer ranges.you can do aks out to longer ranges but it's a heck of a lot harder ,for me anyway, the modularity of the platform and availability of parts is another plus. But every now and then after disassembling the bcg to scrub carbon I miss my old ak

Good points. I do feel that the AK or variant is kind of cheaply made. The one I shot was Serbian made and it had some problems with the magazine. I do like the AR for long distance and I think 5.56/.223 is a good little round. Still 7.62x39 will do more damage to say a cinderblock wall.

The correct answer is both:D

I went AR platform even built one in 7.62x39. Almost exclusively because right now they are cheaper in basic versions but also because I'd be hard pressed to truly know the difference between a $400 aka and a $1200 aka generally:oops:

Only ever handled one for a minute and put 5ish rounds down range. Honestly want to own one. If for no other reason than to be very familiar with the most common auto feed rifle in the world.

The difference is with the $1200 one, you get to stack $800 less ammo
And pretty much nothing else
That's the problem lol. I want the $400-$500 one. Simple, reliable, the end. But like anything else. If someone was selling the $300 for $600 I couldn't verify with it in hand lol

Both platforms are good. I have both, like both. If you are new to firearms, the AR, IMHO, would be better to START with. After the infection starts, move to the AK.

I always figured the AR as being more versatile because you can snipe someone at 500yds and use the same platform to fight up close if necessary on the exfil. I don't think you could expect to complete that mission with a single AK platform. Maybe with a frikin $2000 AK, lol.

I vote AR. I have an AK and I enjoy it. But I prefer the AR. Seems easier to load, manipulate, customize, and shoot. These days a good solid AR can be had for <$500, where as even old beater WASRs like mine are north of 5-600.

I built an AR in 300 AAC and it does basically what I would want an AK to do...hit hard up close. Except now it shares the same manual of arms as the rest of my carbines.

Back when you could get an Ak for $300 at a pawn shop, and most AR's started at $1000, an Ak was a good buy. I used to own a converted Saiga. For what it was, it was a dang good shooter. Would hold a 3.5 inch group easily, which isn't shabby for a rifle made with rivets and sheet metal. If Ak's were that cheap again, I'm sure I'd get another.

But these days, the tables are reversed. You can find decent AR's under $500, and Ak's seem to run between $600-1000. Why pay more for a gun with generally worse ergonomics, and less accuracy?

As long as AR's are cheaper than Ak,s I can't justify buying another one for myself.

AK's are neat. Worth owning as a novelty. When they are 250-400$ for a decent Russian one.
700-1400? Hahahaha GTFO with that nonsense.

For some reason, I see an AK and immediately feel like I should put on some tattered flipflops and squat over a hole to poop. Weird, don't know why?

I vote for AK, I shoot iron sights on my close quarters battle rifles( like have any knowledge which I don’t). But I’m to fat and old to “run and gun” so I’ll wait till the enemy is close enough to shoot.....then it would be to late but at least I’d scare the s$&t out of someone.

I guess it depends on if the AR you choose can digest .18 per round Tula steel. I know every AK I pick up will do just that, out to 300 yards easily. Never have to worry if my extractor has an o-ring or not either.

AR can easily be lighter, can easily be accurate, can easily be reconfigured.

I have an AK variant, I enjoy it, it's a 10.5 it rolls a wicked fireball. According to legend it will run when my ARs won't.

If I have to chose, AR.

I love both AR and AK. If I could only grab one if SHTF I’d probably want an AR though.

AKs activate a different part of gun enthusiasm for me though and have become my favorite rifles to shoot. But they can be a little heavy and Russian imported ammo may be subject to a ban in the near future. Ergonomics on the AK aren’t quite as good but a little training makes it a non issue. Accessories are out there. You can get rails and mount optics and deck it out just like a tacticool AR if you want.

AR to me is more of a no foolin’ get the job done rifle. They are usually lighter if you don’t hang too many gadgets on them. Attaching optics is easier. Magazines are cheap. Accessories are sold everywhere. Even a barrel change can be done with simple tools in your garage.

I love both, but both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I would try both, decide for yourself.

Get an AR-15. They are a lot more flexable and easier to shoot well. Aks are fun but after a few mag dumps the luster fades.

Just get the YUGO.
I have a Yugo (Serbian) NPAP M70 with a CHF barrel that will put 10rds of Golden Tiger 123gr FMJ into a 2.5" circle at 100yds with a cheap red dot. Off a rifle rest or course.I seriously doubt most ARs can do better with run of the mill FMJ.
