I'll be mounting a scope on my soon to be completed AR and I'm looking for a little advice. To get the eye relief I need the scope will set a little forward of the upper receiver. In this situation is it advantageous to use a cantilever mount/rings so that the scope is just attached to the upper or is ok to attach the rear ring to the upper and the front one to the handguard?

Use a proper cantilever mount. It will provide the right eye relief and everything will be anchored back to the actual upper. I've seen problems with mounting to the handguard in the past and there's no reason to worry about it with all the great options out there specifically engineered for the ar platform.

Thanks. This is what I suspected, just wanted someone smarter than me to confirm it.

I'm probably not smarter but I've spent a lot of time chasing problems on different weapons systems throughout my time in the military and after as a civilian dealing with my friends crazy ideas...

+1
Could never figure put why guys would slap a mount on the forend. Unless that thing is welded to the upper it's gonna move.
If you're budgeted..the Nikon P series mount is a real nice item. The 1-piece is probably more stable overall, but I prefer the 2-piece version as it allows more finite adjustments, and mine have never gotten sloppy or moved around. 50 bucks.

Use the collapsible buttstock to adjust your eye relief?

What scope do you have? If it's made for an AR (i.e. not a traditional hunting scope), it seems they expect you to use a cantilever mount.

Almost all handguards have a top rail. Unless you are mounting something in front of your scope e.g. NV magnifier, it's mostly useless, and unquestionably untrustworthy to assume alignment. Hence the advent of monolithic uppers. For what you would most likely mount, the side and bottom rails are more useful.

Only mounts I recommend are:

LaRue LT104
Bobro
American Defense
Leupold Mark
Nikon P Series 1 Piece
SWFA

That list is solid and covers all budgets.

I agree with this list. And the Aero SPR.

Is the Vortex Viper Extended Cantilever mount any good?

Can anyone speak to the pros and cons of the vertical split rings (like on the Aero) vs the horizontal like on the Burris PEPR? The PEPR has six screws per ring - I tend to be compulsive about torquing sequence so the gap is consistent between the ring halves, which it seems would be more difficult if the rings were split on the vertical.

I found that mounting with clamshell rings can cause the scope to want to rotate just a hair as you tighten, so you need to compensate for it as you tighten them.
I would say that is the only thing to worry about but it is not difficult.

My first scope mount was a pepr mount. Nothing wrong with it. I would say it's probably easier to get scope level with that type of design. Downside is a lot of screws and seems to be overbuilt.

I found the pepr to be a robust mount. I just wanted something lighter, without the huge mounting nuts or QD (both are quite large) and just wanted a streamlined mount with flush screws.

After getting used to the aero design I do like it better for my use.

If it were some kind of heavier bench gun I would use a Geissele mount or a Bopro.

My guns are more for running and gunning so your needs may vary from mine.

I believe @bigfelipe has an Vortex extended mount.
Not sure if same one as I believe Vortex has used a couple different oem suppliers for their mounts.
