Hello everyone, I’m hoping you can help me with a recommendation for a charging handle for my Aero AR10. I’ll do my best with the technical lingo, but I’m hardly a gunsmith, so please stick with me!

My rifle has a Magpul PRS stock on it and also has an AXTS Raptor charging handle. The charging handle has a clearance issue with the adjustable cheek piece on the PRS (it hits it). After messing with this for a while, I called Magpul and they confirmed that this charging handle won’t work with the PRS stock due to it sticking too far out of the back of the receiver (please see photo). I hope this makes sense...

Can those of you out there recommend a quality charging handle that does not stick very far out of the receiver (the closer the better)? It doesn’t need to be ambidextrous.

Thanks in advance!

I have a prs on mine and a plain charging handle and it clears fine...which model numer prs do you have? I kinda recall some differences for clearance, but this was 2016 when I bought mine..

I cant imagine there would be much difference between a regular charging handle and yours..

While not a 100% for you this may help if you have any extra stock handles laying around. I switched several of my rifles over, along with trimming the spring and rounding the sharp angle of the latch some. It helped with the rifles that I have my scopes mounted lower to the upper and space is limited.

I bought mine in 2016 (maybe 2015?) as well (I had the rifle built and it has sat ever since - long story). I just see a CAGE number and PRS AR10. I believe it's a GEN 1.

The one I currently have out there sticks out just a bit too much, so when you can't quite pull it all the way out before it hits the raised cheek piece (has 1/8" -1/4" to go). The rep at Magpul said that switching to a "regular" non-ambi handle should fix the problem. I just didn't know if someone else had run into this and there was one that they preferred and knew worked.

Now that a "helper" is home and could take a photo, hopefully this will make up for my poor explanation skills. You can see where the handle hits the cheek piece. I don't have any other handles unfortunately and was trying not to start a collection of them if someone has already dealt with this and had a proven make/model that worked. If not, I'll grab a cheapie and give it a shot. Thanks again for the help!

I'm not sure that particular item would help, but it lead me to this:

Which looks as though it would sit further into the receiver and potentially provide enough clearance.

well it is longer sticking out to the side which gives more leverage to pull it back without making the handle longer which appears to be your problem. This was assuming you had a stock one which your later post says no. It was just a shot.

I have a lot of strike industries stuff on most of my ARs from 308 (no prs stock though), 300, 223, 45, 9mm and 22lr and while I'm not an operator just a hunter and plinker, it has held up well and not overpriced usually.

Hrmm...ill have to get a pic if mine to see how much clearance there is.

Been wanting to swap charging handles so I guess a good exercise to see what works.

Crank the cheek riser up high enough to where the charging handle will clear it underneath it.. Curious how much more room you need.

I don't think I understood how that worked correctly at first to be honest. Thanks for clarifying and for your help!

You may need the appropriate PRS for the large AR platform. This is a common issue when the standard AR-15 PRS stock is used on the large ARs. The AR-10 version of the PRS uses a shorter cheek piece that allows for full travel of the charging handle.

I’ve confirmed with Magpul that I have the correct PRS. It has PRS AR10 on the right hand side.
