Arrest made in tactical training shooting that left victim paralyzed, cops say

If you let a safety procedure creep away from standard because the last 999 times you ran through it nothing bad happened, that 1000th time is gonna get you.
We lost one of our "alumni" shooters a while back. I took him aside where nobody could hear our conversation and Told him he Had to stop losing control of his muzzle. Inside 2 minutes I was looking down that damned muzzle again. I asked him again to be more careful. We took a break and I called everybody together to give them a refresher on what I expected from all. Later on another "drill" I noticed he was missing. When I asked, three folks said he got his gear and left. He has not been back since early January. He is absolutely welcome to return but he and all the rest are bound by The Gunsite Safety Rules....PERIOD!

Cooper's Gunsite Safety rules are infallible. We have them posted here in several places. IF observed you can have a safe experience.

Number 3 has been a problem. You can't watch Too Close.

Three is in jeopardy when people shoot faster than they can. We implore people here to shoot as fast as they can. Most shoot Faster than they can.

John Dean or Jeff as he was known knew what he was doing when he "canned" those rules. Work then, still work today.

In the context of this topic the rules for gun safety do not apply.

Because they should not of had a gun in the training zone in the first place. I that for me is the key take away.

IF any of you are participating in FoF training I would advise you to inspect EVERY person role playing personally, before you join the training set. If anyone has a issue with that, leave.

Sorry, but I find little sympathy for the idiot who got shot or the idiot that shot him. If you want to play cowboys and Indians or cops and robbers then go to your local paintball range and have at it. Or better yet go shoot IDPA or USPSA. It's fun and a whole lot safer! :D

Yeah...this basically shows that you have zero idea what FoF training is for, its efficacy, and it’s benefits.

I have never been in FOF training. I have been in FOF situations many times. At my age I am too old for either now. A thugs nightmare...too old to fight or run.
From the first part of the last century, Elmer Keith never allowed his children to "play" with firearms. They never had "toy" guns. He was of a mind it was essential for them to know how to use them and what they were for.
IF I was just 20 years younger I would line up for some FOF training. There are a coupla young spuds on here I would trust completely. Make that 3.....next time @Stick Man is here Ima just jump right on his back when he ain't lookin!!!!!!

Company looks suspect. Simms with a pistol means either a blue slide conversion kit or a full blue pistol.

Super sad that someone is now paralyzed, this is yet another cautionary tale to do your research and maintain awareness if you want to participate in anything similar. It's unregulated and based on movement and firearms.

I'm late to this party, but in training where we used Simunitions each training partner physically checked the others gun to confirm it's condition before the action started. And if you've ever been hit with a Simunitions round, it hurts! It ain't no toy! We mostly used it for contact distance, hand to hand, FoF.

also late on this one, and I agree about checking others. The FOF class I took went so far as to assign a partner opponent to each participant for each drill. You would search each other to make sure nobody had a concealed pistol or blade on their person. We would also load the other guy's mags that were being discharged at you.

  • All guns are always loaded
  • Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy
  • Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target
  • Identify your target, and what is behind it
These rules are prominently displayed here, Exactly as above, in several places. My problem here is and always has been Rule 2.

The point of FOF training is to point and discharge the gun at the other guy. Regular safety rules are great for their intended purpose on a one way range. Enter the shoothouse and rules change. Add stupidity to the shoothouse and people get hurt.

Dang I never even heard about this......Rockwell is an excellent training group and I have taken classes with them myself. The owner is a descent fella from what I can tell and am sure he is mortified this happened at his event. Im sure there will be a change in protocol going forward and should be!
