I've only just now got into camping, well, if you can call a pop up camper camping. I've been out once to Cane Creek in Waxhaw and it was very pleasant. I plan to go out again in the next couple of weeks and was thinking Arrowhead in Troy, NC.

Does anyone have any tips on this particular campground that may make it a worthwhile trip? Campsite location, activities, etc.?

Thanks!!

A pop up camper is great. Money spent vs time used, the best value there is.

Exactly. Low cost, high yield. My girls love camping and we've had some great times. We have a travel trailer and were set to go to Arrowhead the weekend before Memorial Day last year but cancelled because of the rain. I've read more good reviews than bad. It seems like a hub for offroadering. Big Jeeps and such. I'll be interested to hear what folks have to say about it.

Looks like a nice one.

That's awesome. My youngest daughter and I have gone to the RV show in GSO for the last couple or 3 years in January. We love seeing and climbing through ALL of the campers. From tear drops to the big million dollar Greyhound bus ones. We're scheduled to head up to Stone Mtn State Park next weekend, weather permitting. Can't wait, first trip this year.

It is one of the campgrounds that people use when four wheeling at Uwharrie National Park but hikers, mountain bikers and casual campers use it too. I only go when four wheeling but Inunderstand there is decent fishing, canoeing, hiking, sightseeing, etc there too. I plan on taking one or both of my daughters there this year for casual camping and four wheeling once I am done building my K5

Arrowhead is also about 5 minutes from the Flintlock rifle and pistol range. $3 for an all day pass.
NCGO has had a few annual get together a at Arrowhead in the past few years, late fall. It's a pretty decent campground

Thank you for the information about the range. We actually saw it on a map.

I have a question about that for you or anyone else that may know the answer. Can you hear the shots at the campground?

It's not bad at all and the range closes at sunset

So, that's a yes? You can hear them?

I camp at URE every year. plenty to do. be sure to get your range pass at Eldorado outpost on the way in. the dust can be pretty bad when its dry. and I have seen a timber rattler up there.....

We kept one for 14 years, and it was something that defined our family during that time. I towed it to Disney, and north to Jersey, west to Nashville and Alabama. In Salisbury, there is Dan Nicholas Park, you have got to check out. If you have kids from 2-18, they will love this place. It's mostly closed right now, but when the season opens, it has a campground, great fishing lake, an aquarium, petting zoo, splash zone, fantastic play ground, and a lot more.

It is a nice campground and relatively well maintained compared to other . gov campgrounds. And, Flintlock range is part of the park. We've stayed in the the campground a couple of times and dry camped in our pop-up on the open land (legal in a National Park) a few times. Just be prepared to live off battery power and propane if you choose dry camping.

We are planning another trip for May.

So, again, can you hear the shots from the range at the campground? This is very important to me.

You can hear the range, but depending on your sensitivity, and which campsite you get, you may or may not notice it.
With normal everyday sounds all around, I didn't "hear" the range unless i was specifically listening for it.

Looking at the map, I looks like the range is only about 3000ft away. So I would say it is within hearing range.
I know where you are coming from. It could be a problem.

We've already cancelled the reservation. I guess the search is on for another campground.

I appreciate your input, but we've already cancelled the reservation.

You may want to check out Morrow Mountain State Park, it's in the same area, but on the other side of the lake.
I have been there before, but many years ago.

if you stay at "group camp" you will not hear the range

Although we have already cancelled, what is "group camp"?

Kcult - I understand that your family would not like to hear range noise. That said, as mentioned previously, if you and family are willing to camp off grid (battery power and tank water), the "old horse camp" area is far from the Range noise and close enough to lake for fishing.

I don't recall hearing the range shots when we have stayed at Arrowhead. And this was during the dove season opener. Didn't hear any dove shots either, but of course I hunted that morning. All in all, I would rank Arrowhead as a top-notch USFS campground. Morrow Mountain barely has any powered spots in one loop and it's crowded now with the online reservations. What's great about Arrowhead is if you have a boat it's right next to the boat ramp and has great access to the lake

Shhh quit telling people about that. We take the road all the way down and camp right on the lake. The roads a bit iffy to pull a camper down there.

I have stayed at Arrowhead a couple times in my pop up and enjoyed it both times. Also stayed at Morrow Mountain and many others.
