Ashtray viewing window?

Why does my center console ashtray have a "viewing window" on the back side?

This is in my 2000 Lexus RX300.

Interestingly, there's a corresponding hole in the console where the window matches up.

There's nothing in the owners manual.

An interesting curiosity.

Not on my Lexus. The hole it lines up with is just that...a hole.

But that might have been an option, I suppose.

Most cars I get, the ashtrays turn into change holders.

I'm thinking this one is going to be repurposed as a phone mount.

2000 was a sucky year for convenient cell phone placements.

I'm going to get another ashtray insert and epoxy the base of something like this in it:
