That would have allowed him to gun up and set the barricade.Complete failure on her part. Should have never followed him in after the verbal exchange until back up arrived. The rest would never had happened after that.
I see both sides, and o clue which would be more routine SOP.That would have allowed him to gun up and set the barricade.
For shoplifting? Damn come back tomorrow when he takes out the garbage. Weak officer chasing grown man? Worked out well. That would have allowed him to gun up and set the barricade.
I would be rather concerned about how many bystanders she will shot trying to prosecute another less-than-$100 offense. At least, her fellow officers are paid for that risk and have a part in having her among them.If she continues she will eventually get another officer killed.

She should have tazed his ass as soon as he pulled away from her.
Many agencies are moving away from tasers. I'm betting she didn't have one on her.She should have tazed his ass as soon as he pulled away from her.
Bingo! She should have tazed his ass as soon as he pulled away from her.
I believe it’s best practice, and maybe even departmental policy, to only use less-lethal when you have lethal coverage. Since she’s alone there was no other coverage, in a confined space she can’t retreat, and clearly she is out-muscled so fighting isn’t a good option. She should have tazed his ass as soon as he pulled away from her.
Well, with COVID-19, you won't see much of this anymore. Lots of departments are only responding to shots fired and personal injury calls. Anything else will be, "We'll take your info and get back to you in a couple of weeks." How long do you think it will take the crooks to figure out that the cops aren't coming out to burglary and theft calls?
Agree, when he clenched his fist at 2:00 Taser time. Plus mommy was ignoring officer, she even grabbed her by the left arm. Mom should have left the house and would not have gotten shot because she was in the way.She should have tazed his ass as soon as he pulled away from her.
Not LE materialComplete failure on her part.
LE materialThat guy knows how to control a situation.
Bad JuJuWeak officer chasing grown man?
AmenGirl power. I guess it works better in movies.
Not LE materialShe did so many things wrong when she should’ve tried to de-escalate and waited for backup because clearly she couldn’t handle this guy 1:1. The shooting of his mom was just the icing on the cake.
100% RIGHT!!!!! Not LE materialBased on how long it's taking backup to arrive she's been in this position before and her fellow officers have about had enough. She can't handle the job yet keeps drawing a paycheck for doing nothing. If she continues she will eventually get another officer killed.
100% RIGHT!!!!! Not LE material1. Not a woman's job. Send me to the principal's office for saying that. There comes a time when we need to snap the hell out of it and tell "society" that some of its ideas are stupid and wrong. The officer being a woman caused the majority of this.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^THIS!!!!!!!!!She should have tazed his ass as soon as he pulled away from her.
Gate is Locked and we are in Condition Yellow/Orange...……..How long do you think it will take the crooks to figure out that the cops aren't coming out to burglary and theft calls?
Not Here.....last time I was told 45 minutes for Officer on SiteThey seem to respond faster where I am located.
My adopted daughter was the Only female on the Fifth Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit. She is 5 feet and 3 inches and weighs 125. She can run a carbine as good as any man, can't shoot a pistol Or fight worth a shit. I worried about her every day. She is now CSI so most are DRT when she arrives on scene.clearly she is out-muscled so fighting isn’t a good option.
Not LE material!!!She was virtually worthless, no communication skills and then no physical skills or tactical skills to make up the gap. A good officer can do both masterfully.
Like this is going to help right?

I just assumed that we already wereIndeed. Soon you really will be your own first responder. Not that you aren't already.
Late to the party on this one. Saw the thread earlier but didn't watch the video until I caught up on the ASP YT channel. First thing I was thinking based upon speech and body language was the guy was somewhere on the MRDD spectrum. You are correct that they need to take a different approach when dealing with them. It looked to me like she jumped into the "I have to take control at all costs" mentality and she really got lucky. A lot of the MRDD clients get that fight or flight trigger and they can be inhumanly strong, violent, and can injure you badly without even thinking about it.Putting on my mental health professional hat here:
She got too wrapped up in the argument over touching him. Concede the point, finish reading him his rights and then proceed with questioning, and yes go ahead and call for backup if you have to arrest him. But he may have actually allowed her to cuff him if she'd not got grabby first and then got stuck on how it was her right to get grabby.
This dude is obviously mentally ill, and based on his statements and body language has a trauma history. Once that trauma response is triggered it's fight or flight. You can't reason with that.
This is one of the reasons I'm active in teaching CIT classes with local LE. This situation could possibly have been avoided with an alteration of her approach once she realized she was dealing with someone with a mental illness.
Didn’t the mom also say at some point he wouldn’t feel the same way once he was sober...First thing I was thinking based upon speech and body language was the guy was somewhere on the MRDD spectrum. You are correct that they need to take a different approach when dealing with them.
Don’t know. If she did I didn’t catch it.Didn’t the mom also say at some point he wouldn’t feel the same way once he was sober...
