Standard CFF Monthly Rimfire Benchrest Challenge Rules
- Target Size: Standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper
- Target distance: 50 yards
- Any shooting position you'd like
- Front rests, bipods, front/rear shooting bags, bunny ears, ... etc. are all ok.
- No full length rifle mechanical rail/sled type rests allowed
- Iron sights or optics of your choice are all allowed
- All done on the honor system. Shoot it, score it, post it.
- Winner chooses the target and challenge for the next month.
- Post copy of your target and setup and ammo used.

I had a couple ideas, but decided to go with this one, and also limit it to 10 shots. This way, you can shoot a little cheaper. Times are tough, so maybe this will allow people to try more than they would have if it had more targets. I don't remember us doing this one any the last couple years.

Shoot the Flies!

Rules are on the target, but:
  • Only 10 shots
  • Shoot any flies you want
  • Hit a fly in the Red Eyes = 3 Points
  • Hit a fly in any other part of the body = 1 Point
  • Hitting the eyes and body gets you the higher score of 3 Points
  • Tiebreaker = Most Eye Shots
Have fun. Shoot often. And EVERYBODY is welcome. Don't worry if you have the highest or lowest score. Just enjoy getting out and shooting. And share the results with the rest of us!

I added a v2 version of the file to change how the box at the bottom prints for people that aren't seeing the box pop up correctly with the rules. The flies on both files are identical, but the box at the bottom may appear differently depending on the program you open pdf's with.

I remember shooting at this one a few years ago. Note that I said , shooting at! It is a hard target, but will be fun as always!

Well darn! I tried finding something different and that I wouldn’t have to recreate like my last few. I also tried to find one that had fairly larger targets, just in case. Tried making one a little easier with fewer shots that would entice a few more people to go for it.
As well as you shot that last one missing by the slimmest margins, you should destroy these flies!

It was 3 years ago. Plus, we didn’t have the red-eye bonus. It’s all good.

Met @Jeppo and @Zbizzle911 at PHA this morning. Managed to shoot two targets before the deluge started.

Scored an 11:

and a 15:

I would’ve have two 15s, but I’m such an expert marksman that I chose to shoot the front antennae off of two flies but not hit their eyes.

but I should get a bonus 10 points for being the first one to post targets this time :D

LOL... Bonus points! I keep forgetting to post mine from last week. Glad you reminded me. I’m waiting on some orings to get back out there.

And it definitely was a deluge out there today!

Different air rifle coming up for the next attempt.

I'm way behind, I haven't even printed a target yet!
Mine did print a little odd. The box at the bottom shifted. But I assumed the bugs were ok.

That is odd. The bugs probably didn’t move. I created a box to add more details for our game directly on the target covering the old comments. The bugs didn’t change. Not sure why that shifted like that.

Sweet! We need some more shooting going on. These flies are huge and it is only 10 shots, I thought plenty of people would try it. I tried to make it as cheap and easy as possible.

I am going to try to revisit that file now, since a couple people have had issues with the box.

Looks like it is only working correctly in Adobe Reader. Not sure why. I had my wife use her photo program to try to adjust the box for us. Use either file you want. The flies are unchanged.

Use can use either file however they print.

I shot a 3. I'm too embarrassed to post it, but hey I tried.
Lame excuse time. It was windy this morning.
Going to try it again with CCI. The Wolf doesn't seem to like my CZ too well.

It's never too bad to post! We do this all for fun. It is great to see some people give it a try, I plan to shoot it this weekend. I will post whatever I shoot, and keep trying to get better!;)

I gave it a try today. Need to try some more. Best of 4 targets was a 13, worst was a 3. It's not a winner, but it was fun! I will try again when I get some time. :)
CZ 455, Athlon Helos BTR 6-24×50
Ammo: Eley CMP 1090 fps
I didn't take a new picture of the rifle today, but I used the same old setup!;)

Looking good! Always love seeing the CZs!

Glad to see some more shooting too. That was so close to higher score! You must have just missed the eyes by a hair on a couple of those.

Finally back to shooting. First time out in a long time and it showed. It sucked. Shot one target and it was a 15 and was not sure if one of them was a 0 or a 1. So I took the 0.
Forgot to take picture but the same as I have used in the past. Hopefully I will be able to make it back out this month.

Rifle: Ancshutz 64 sbr
Scope: T-36
Caldwell Rock: Front rest
Ammo: Eley Target
Weather: Rain, 8-10 mph crosswind

Nice. Couple of 15s posted. Time to get a few more people shooting.

Got my new scope in today, so hopefully I can finally get back out there this weekend.

My son and I shot a few of this target which made me mount a new scope. I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm heading to the range in a bit. I'm going to give this a shot again. This time I'm going ot try CCI regular and some higher velocity stuff.

Show us the rifle!! We like CZs!!

Interesting on the CCI. Do you know if it was newer Wolf or older stuff? Several of my CZs liked the SK variety better than the Eley.
I posted my rifle earlier in the thread, the first time I shot the target like crud and got a 3.

The Wolf is a few years old so I believe it's the SK stuff. I'm a little annoyed I'm sitting on a bit of it.

@ECNC
I haven't tried anything except CCI standard, Wolf Match (SK production), and CCI mini mags.

The mini mags shoot decent, but hit a little higher and to the right than the "perfect" zero with standard.

The Wolf shoots low and left relative to the CCI. I didn't expect this result because the Wolf cost double what the CCI cost. I laid in a decent supply of Wolf based upon other people reporting good results with a CZ 455. Seems like par for the course with rim fire guns, they like what they like.

I tried again today. 4 Targets and my best 2 were tied at 14! I really enjoy shooting this target! I shot it with the CZ 455, Athlon Helos BTR 6-24×50, using Eley CMP ammo with a front bi-pod and a rear bag.20200913_213549.jpg 20200913_213542.jpg 20200913_213530.jpg 20200708_195704.jpg

Made it out this morning. Finally a cool morning. I was rusty but I was pleased with being able to shoot a little.

First I shot the CZ 455 American with a Weaver 2-7 rimfire. Ammo was SK Standard Plus.

Not great but the 7 power is tough.

Next up is my little Ruger American with Boyd’s stock. Scope is Vortex 6-18 AO and was shooting Norma Tac-22

Better! The last target looks like I could have got a 14. The 1 point thats second from top left is pretty close:rolleyes:

Nice! This is what I was hoping for. People could shoot it several times and not be as worried about ammo costs.

I need to post results from the weekend too.

Hi Rimfire guys! Many of you might not know me, as I don't shoot a lot of rimfire. So I am not down here much, in fact, never have been. So hello!

Cruising around a couple of weeks ago, I saw this, took a look, and thought to myself this just looked like a hell of a lot of fun, I'd like to play too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a couple of rimfire rifles, so I figured while I was doing some other big bore work on the range, I would check out my rifles and get them sighted in. I have a Brno 22 lr that I have taken on several prairie dog shoots and had the most fun with it than any of the normal 223s. Fact is, I am pretty proud of a few prairie dogs I have taken with this rifle. The first trip I took it on, I was able to score a prairie dog at 176 yards! Measured by laser. Man, I was pretty proud of that. The next trip out, I quit with the benches and went off on Walkabout. Along with a set of sticks. I spotted a couple of dogs way out, fired one round for range, next for effect and hit the damn thing. There was one right behind it, and hit it too! Measured the distance, 226 yards, NEW RECORD for me. So yes, I figured surely to heavens I could hit these flies at 50 yards... Piece of Cake..................

So over the last couple of weeks I have been testing various 22 lr Ammo I had on hand to see how the Brno shoots it. I had a 3X9 Nikon on the gun and it was shooting pretty good. Then I tested some CCI 36 gr HP's I had, and it really liked these. This is my 5 round test......I suppose I pulled one round out.

DSCN0934-X3.jpg

OK, this was good, I would zero the scope and start knocking the flies eyes out ...................

DSCN0935-X3.jpg

Oh H*ll Yes......... I quit after three rounds, I knew a 4th would be a jinx...... no way I was going to mess this 3 rd group up! Watch out Fly Eyes, HERE I COME...................Holy Cow, I am going to kick some FLY ASS NOW..........
WOO HOO............................

OK, well it just didn't quite work out as I thought!

My scores were so low, I am even ashamed to announce them! OMG, it was awful. After trying 3 times, it was apparent I could not hit these damn flies! Wait, I had shot so good above???????? OK, I could not see the flies so good, I had a nice diamond target, easy to line up the cross hairs in that and keep steady............. Shooting a LONE FLY was a whole different GAME................

Hmmm....... Bigger scope.......... I came in, did a search and had a 4X12 Nikon, YES, that might be enough, going from 9- 12X Might work..... So I mounted the scope, sighted it in................ But it was just as dismal as the 3X9, I still could not see the damn flies good enough............

DSCN0829-X3.jpg

OK OK OK........... Let me drag out the BIG STUFF now....................... Serious target shooting..........My Anschutz Model Match 54.................. But it only has irons on it, and I am not going to lie, I have never shot it since getting it..............

DSCN0831-X3.jpg

I looked and yes, I believe I could mount a scope on it, but what was the point, the Brno would shoot good enough, I just can't see good enough, I need MORE POWER....... I did shoot a nice 1 inch group with the Anschutz and the irons, I was
pretty pleased with that....................

Now I really got fed up with this crap. What can I do? How can I hit those damn flies?

GET A BIGGER GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we talking just my Game! Go Big, or Stay Home! Big Bore rifles have always solved my problems for me, I should be able to NUKE these damn Flies with a Proper Rifle Caliber!

This morning I decided to give it a go with one of my .500 caliber rifles................. And guess what........ I did pretty spiffy!
