Aug/Sept 2020 50 yard rimfire challenge

OK OK OK......................

Yes, I know I am totally disqualified for CHEATING................... But you have to admit, I nuked some of them properly!

LOL.............

This entire thing is meant to bring some humor into the Game. That is all..................

From me however, I commend all of you playing this game, it is great. Those of you with some higher scores....> WOW.... incredible shooting, very very well done. This is not as easy as it looks.........But is big fun............

I think I have to find some bigger glass for this sort of thing in the near future, I doubt I will before this game is over, but you may want to look out for me in the future too............ I Ain't Quit Yet.......... HEH HEH............

Thank you for indulging me today, and I hope you enjoy the story..........Keep Shooting..................

Michael,
That was awesome!!! Thanks for joining in, and for the great read.

I’m glad you had fun, because that is what it is all about!

I agree that the hardest part is seeing them at 50 yards. It takes more magnification than you think until you try it for sure.

Hi Rimfire guys! Many of you might not know me, as I don't shoot a lot of rimfire. So I am not down here much, in fact, never have been. So hello!

Cruising around a couple of weeks ago, I saw this, took a look, and thought to myself this just looked like a hell of a lot of fun, I'd like to play too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a couple of rimfire rifles, so I figured while I was doing some other big bore work on the range, I would check out my rifles and get them sighted in. I have a Brno 22 lr that I have taken on several prairie dog shoots and had the most fun with it than any of the normal 223s. Fact is, I am pretty proud of a few prairie dogs I have taken with this rifle. The first trip I took it on, I was able to score a prairie dog at 176 yards! Measured by laser. Man, I was pretty proud of that. The next trip out, I quit with the benches and went off on Walkabout. Along with a set of sticks. I spotted a couple of dogs way out, fired one round for range, next for effect and hit the damn thing. There was one right behind it, and hit it too! Measured the distance, 226 yards, NEW RECORD for me. So yes, I figured surely to heavens I could hit these flies at 50 yards... Piece of Cake..................

So over the last couple of weeks I have been testing various 22 lr Ammo I had on hand to see how the Brno shoots it. I had a 3X9 Nikon on the gun and it was shooting pretty good. Then I tested some CCI 36 gr HP's I had, and it really liked these. This is my 5 round test......I suppose I pulled one round out.

DSCN0934-X3.jpg

OK, this was good, I would zero the scope and start knocking the flies eyes out ...................

DSCN0935-X3.jpg

Oh H*ll Yes......... I quit after three rounds, I knew a 4th would be a jinx...... no way I was going to mess this 3 rd group up! Watch out Fly Eyes, HERE I COME...................Holy Cow, I am going to kick some FLY ASS NOW..........
WOO HOO............................

OK, well it just didn't quite work out as I thought!

My scores were so low, I am even ashamed to announce them! OMG, it was awful. After trying 3 times, it was apparent I could not hit these damn flies! Wait, I had shot so good above???????? OK, I could not see the flies so good, I had a nice diamond target, easy to line up the cross hairs in that and keep steady............. Shooting a LONE FLY was a whole different GAME................

Hmmm....... Bigger scope.......... I came in, did a search and had a 4X12 Nikon, YES, that might be enough, going from 9- 12X Might work..... So I mounted the scope, sighted it in................ But it was just as dismal as the 3X9, I still could not see the damn flies good enough............

DSCN0829-X3.jpg

OK OK OK........... Let me drag out the BIG STUFF now....................... Serious target shooting..........My Anschutz Model Match 54.................. But it only has irons on it, and I am not going to lie, I have never shot it since getting it..............

DSCN0831-X3.jpg

I looked and yes, I believe I could mount a scope on it, but what was the point, the Brno would shoot good enough, I just can't see good enough, I need MORE POWER....... I did shoot a nice 1 inch group with the Anschutz and the irons, I was
pretty pleased with that....................

Now I really got fed up with this crap. What can I do? How can I hit those damn flies?

GET A BIGGER GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now we talking just my Game! Go Big, or Stay Home! Big Bore rifles have always solved my problems for me, I should be able to NUKE these damn Flies with a Proper Rifle Caliber!

This morning I decided to give it a go with one of my .500 caliber rifles................. And guess what........ I did pretty spiffy!

DSCN0936-X3.jpg
Great story! Hope you stick with us and get that .22 dialed in!

I agree that the hardest part is seeing them at 50 yards. It takes more magnification than you think until you try it for sure.

I have some eye issues on top of that........ I did not do any better at 12X than 9x, so I need more to see the damn flies! HEH.......

I have ONE MORE confession to make as well, one does not shoot 9X-12X glass on big bore rifles. I was shooting a 1X4 Nikon with this 500. Of course, I could not see flies at 50 yards at all, so I cheated even more, and dropped to 25 yards!

Oh I intend to play with both the Brno and the Anschutz, its just good fun. Maybe one day I can submit a legitimate target.............
Thanks

I can tell that you have a sense of humor. This is a fun group to join and we enjoy seeing new folks shooting with us. We love to see pictures of your rifles and setups and we post most pictures of our targets, either good or bad. Stick with us and enjoy yourself.

Thanks TNT and Smok3y......... As I do other things on the range, I will put some time aside to play with the 22's as well...........I will keep you guys posted on the results and some pics of the rifles as well.......... Should be good fun. Thanks for the Rimfire welcome's........ But I might go nuts once and awhile and try and cheat with some .500s.... HEH HEH, especially if I can't get the 22's to work for me... so better keep a sharp eye out, look for bigger holes.... dead give away.... HEH........

It’s ok. I’ve been tempted to try one of the targets with one round of 410 birdshot many times. :D

I gave it a couple more tries today! Scored an 11 with the 455 Tacticool and a 4 with the 455 trainer! Still not winners, but I gotta post them. I took new pictures of the rifles too! I was shooting Geco Match 22 today. I shot up about 200 rounds with all the plinking on steel targets and some clay pigeons. It was a bit windy and that made it more difficult, but I had fun!:)

How did you like the Geco Match in the CZ? I’ve got the same ammo and trying to be patient waiting the 10-14 day ship time for the CZ I ordered. If I keep it up, there I’ll be some glass here waiting on the rifle to arrive.

looking forward to playing this game with all you fine CFF folks soon.

I like the Geco Match, I shoot it regularly in matches and have done well with it. I also shoot the Geco lr for practice as it is a littlr less expensive.

One more day to post some scores! We are in a tie with Big Waylon and ECNC, each with 15 points! This is a real nail biter!

I will not be able to get another one in. Will be shooting Thursday, so hopefully someone will post a new target Wed. night.

Somebody? You’re 50% responsible. :D

I’m looking forward to trying next round.

If you hurry and shoot this one you just might beat these two!;)
Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!

@ECNC and I spent hours and hours trying to come up with a target. Don’t waste our efforts!!!

My 10/22 w a sparc won’t cut the mustard for this. Waiting on all my boxes to arrive...

I am on the range now, doing my best to kill 3 or 4 of the damn things............. New scope, on the Anschutz, it shoots a lot better than I can! Looks like I am going to have to drag out one of the bigger guns.........

I will Nuke the bastards if can't get them with the Anschutz................... New scopes coming today for the Brno............. HEH......

I think you top dogs with the big points are still very safe................

ECNC and BigWaylon, are you guys going to work together and pick a target or have a shoot out! I mean shoot off!

Had a duel last night. Ended in a tie. :D

He and I discussed a couple options and have a target ready to post. Just making sure nobody outshoots us today.

I hate to do this guys, but I thought I submitted these Saturday. I think I got interrupted and never posted it.

I have two 17s. The one with factory medium is a little more clear at 17, as the Power 11 one had an eye shot with a tear, making it difficult to confirm.

By all means, PLEASE pick a target. I have not thought about it at all.

These were both with my newest air rifle, Daystate Red Wolf, shooting 25.4gr .22 pellets. One target is before I upgraded the electronics and the other is after. I was glad it didn’t get worse, but it would have been nice to get better. I shot many 7s, 10s, and 13s as I tried out a bunch of different ammo at different speeds, but the 25.4gr were the best.

Not sure I’ve ever seen an air rifle that was rimfire. :p

True! Definitely don’t have to call me the winner, as you are correct, I am not within the rimfire rules.

I did stick to 22 to be as close as I could. But I just have so much fun playing this. As we have said, it isn’t really about the competition as it is the fun with the group!

All I got right now, besides a few single shots and plinkers and my skwerl assassin CZ, but a 9x scope can’t handle this.

I posted a new challenge and all three of you are congratulated for a great target. I updated the winning score and gave the target pick to BigWaylon and ECNC. If that's ok we will stick with it. I can edit if I need to. As always, this is just for fun and as long as we are having fun we are all happy! :)

How did you do Michael458? Post us some pictures.:D

HEH....>> I gotta get a bigger caliber to play this. I will post tomorrow morning, best I could do was 11............. But it is FUN............ Will show some photos of rifle and new scope. Thanks............

This has been a lot of fun, thanks guys for sparking some interest in something other than 458 and 500 caliber. Although that has Priority in my world, this is just fun, and gave me a good excuse to get some small bore rifle going again after many years........ In Fact, the big Anschutz has never been fired until the last couple of weeks, just something I never got around to. This one fell in my lap several years ago from @BatteryOaksBilly and has been on the back burner for too long.

I had the two rifles up for getting outfitted anyway, and this gave me a good excuse to move forward.

I have some eye issues that is just giving me fits with some things, and this is sure one of them. Most of the scopes I run are not hi power, for medium calibers 3X9 and a few 3X10 and so forth. For some reason I had one Nikon 4X12 laying around and that was it. After the first few goes on these flies I needed some more, I really could not see the damn things. I am a Nikon fan, and of course they are getting to be fewer as time marches on. I didn't find anything available through the normal channels so I went over to Amazon and started looking around. I did not want to spend a fortune in glass to shoot flies with a 22 LR. But needed something with more power and decent glass. I found in my looking around Sniper Optics? Never heard of them, but I don't get out much either. These are imported by Texas Precision Optics. They looked decent, lots of bells and whistles, and probably the greatest thing was the "For The Money Factor"........... I thought I was looking at a 1 inch tube, which is what I wanted, 4X16, more bells and whistles than you can imagine, for $139.00! I pondered on this a short time, $139.00...... Well if it's not worth a damn, one is not out a small fortune, so I hit the buy button. I also needed some new rings and so forth, I didn't have any, wanted to get the Anschutz up and running with glass........

A few days pass, and I get the scope, take it out of the box and low and behold, its 30mm, not 1 inch......... 30mm rings for a dovetail 22 LR? Do they even make such a thing? Nothing from Midway, Graf, Midsouth........ back to Amazon, and sure enough some rather expensive 30mm 11mm dovetail rings, cost about $10! I was not sure of height, so ordered medium and tall........... A few days later these pitched up, and for this big 4X16 scope the medium height worked fine...........

Now about the scope, now if I had paid $1500 I would not be very impressed with it, and would have expected a lot from it. For $139.00 I was extremely impressed. It was as clear as I could make use of, everything seemed to work properly, it appeared to be well made. Once I got it on the gun, and on the range, I was impressed, it moved correctly and sighting in was just not an issue at all.

In fact, I was so impressed with it I went shopping again.......... Yesterday I took deliver of 4 more Sniper Optics of various types to give a workout. Three of these are 1" tubes, 4X24, 4X16 and 3X9. Another one is 1X4 30mm tube I got just to try out. Thing is, I spent less than $500 on these...... I could not mount these on the Brno yesterday however, because the objective bell is 50 mm and big, it touches the barrel, and need a bit taller rings. Problem with the Brno is that it is not standard 11mm dovetail, its larger? I don't have this sorted out just yet, if you guys have ideas on this please send me in the right direction. The dovetail is .625 wide... I think that's what I measured yesterday? Quick search I did not find anything like that, but then again I did not go to Amazon!

Anyway, here's the rifle and scope...........

I did not shoot any big expensive ammo, this Aguila Hi Vel seemed to do pretty good. Sight in target at 25 yards After two rounds I was in good enough to move to 50 and fine tune......

DSCN0993-X3.jpg

After getting to 50 and felt like I was tuned in about as good as I could, I set up some flies................. The range has fluorescents and at times with certain projects this can be troublesome to my eyes........ I can control sections of light, and ended up actually shooting with no light on the rifle, but target lighted seemed to give me the best. My problem now was that I only had a few seconds before target, cross hairs and the works went out of focus for me. This is not uncommon for me the last few years, but I was having some issues with keeping focus and was having a hard time with the cross hairs on this scope. They are rather fine, and I would actually loose the middle sometimes. Obviously shooting faster is not the answer in this game. And the target has a lot to do with just how good I can see. The Diamond target is best, because if center is out of focus I can still line up cross hairs in the vertical and horizontal of the diamond. Round is a bit tougher, flies are a bit tougher than that..........

Anyway, regardless thereof I was pleased with the rifle and I know if I could do better the rifle would do its part................

DSCN1019-X3.jpg

The other two larger scopes have slightly different cross hairs than this particular one, I might try those as well to see if I can hold focus a little better.....................

If anyone has a solution to this Brno Dovetail larger than 11mm common, I would love to be pointed in the right direction. I have had this rifle for 25+ years, and best I can remember it came with the one set of rings on it. I never had reason to need more, so never ever paid any attention to it.

Thanks to all, enjoyed it and I will continue to play............ Oh, and as a side note on this, I have three kids, and we are going to have family competition with the Flies....... Of course they are older, but we intend to keep a running tally of things. I think they will all have some fun with this too...........

Finally got around to shooting my rifle huh? Now about that mounting problem....A few decades ago we would have just JB Welded that baby on!!!!
I have the equipment for this problem and Mike has the perfect place to shoot...seems I'm only missing...ability:p

Looking good Mike. I had an older Anschutz Model 54 Supermatch that looked very similar. While I never put a scope on it, I could have sworn that the dovetails were standard 11mm. 3/8” is the only other size I’ve seen. I can’t recall any as large as that measurement.

You ever considered the .22 Eargensplitten Loudenboomer? Seems right up your alley. :D

The Anschutz is 11 mm standard.... Its the Brno that is bigger. I have been searching and maybe found some 15mm dovetail solutions, still looking at some way to convert.......... Actual dovetail seems to be 15.8 mm.... or so, best I can measure anyway.

Finally got around to shooting my rifle huh?

Yeah, took long enough eh?

You ever considered the .22 Eargensplitten Loudenboomer?

I find I lean to bigger bore diameter......

@Michael458

feel free to browse back through all the old challenge threads and find other targets to try out...you don’t have to even post the results, but some of them were quite fun!

I will do that, thanks...............I have the turkey downloaded.........

The dart game was very challenging!
The only one I’d probably refuse to try again is the one where you had to shoot the spider web string before you could start on the rest of the target.

I somehow hit it on the first shot on my first target. Second attempt was a dozen or so shots before I hit it. Don’t wanna go down that road again. ;D
