Thank you for posting this. Those men had incredible courage and faced a daunting casualty rate. If anyone is looking for an amazing book on the subject, check this one out:

Hopefully this will make it to a TV series soon.

Couple of years ago I would work on ambulances in a hanger at the Hickory airport for Blue Rodgers Healthcare transport. I got a chance to see them refurbish a number of jets. Amazing machines.

Just ordered the book and it says soon to be HBO series.

I saw this same aircraft in Sanford, NC maybe a year ago. The plane has been restored to almost exact vintage state. You can walk in the front, through the bombay, and out the aft end. You really get a feel for what those men endured to give us what we have today. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Looks like the plane will also be at the Concord Regional Airport the weekend of Oct 13th and 14th. They fly from 10AM - 3PM and ground tours are allowed after the last flight.

Did they allow interior tours of the plane (for a fee)? My son and I were interested, but we'd like to get a look at the inside.

Aluminum Overcast did, but the door is not open in the pic and no ladder in the front. Those planes are not big enough for folks to go in and out, they route you front to back. But it does say they do ground tours after 3pm. They may not do tours before the flights from 10 am to 3 pm.

We were able to go in the plane as well at no charge (I dropped $20 in the donation jar though). But that was in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday. This weekend they will probably be charging for tours.

The wife loves old planes too!

And this little guy landed right as we were pulling in. I didn't know Hickory could accommodate such large aircraft.
