Backpack stove

Which stove I'll use depends on attitude and temperatures. Extreme cold prefer the MSR Whiperlite. Moderate temps the old Grasshopper propane burner. Just day hiking then the esbit stoves.

For the propane gas stoves. 2 really nices things to get are these.

On the left is an adapter to transfer from can to can. Put one in the freezer, the other in the sun, screw them in and open the valve. The right one is the adapter for the 1 pound bottle to use with stoves. Works great.

I have the sit on top canister type stove, the snowpeak giga to be specific. I have no complaints about it but I've never really thought about a stove for SHTF. These type stoves would eventually become useless in that situation. I think if I were to spend money on one for SHTF I would get a whisperlite or similar that can run off gasoline if needed. One thing about these is that they are quick to setup and put away since they cool quickly. I think in a SHTF situation being able to set up and get moving fast would be more important in the beginning than later on. The ones that run off small sticks would be better in the long run, but I'm thinking I could make one of those fairly easily later on if I needed to or just cook over a fire like they used to before all this lightweight backpacking stuff came about.

So, getting one of each would be ideal but if I had to pick one for SHTF I'd go with the whisperlite.

If you get a butane type backpacker stove, the stove is the least of the weight. Those canisters aren't exactly lightweight, but they are safe and burn like the fires of Gehenna so...there's that.

I got my Primus classic for $5 on Wally clearance so I bought 3 and put it in our emergency kit and 2 bags. They are stable, solid and easy to use. Unlike an Esbit cube stove (which are on sale at Brownells for $6 right now)

The only thing I didn't like about the MSR whisperlight was the pot holders legs. Too far apart for smaller water bottles and smaller "pots". Other than that it was great, much more quiet than the Primus I have now. They do make a silencer for the Primus but it's like 45 bucks. I don't care about the noise that much...

Just tested out my Etekcity stove.

16 oz water from zero to roiling boil in 4mins 15 secs.

Just grabbed 6 of those at the Burlington store. 6 are left.

See what I mean? Lol

I love it. And it’s super priced in mass drop. Biggest thing i like is the wind deflector which my little etekcity stoves don’t have. I’ve bought too much stuff since I’ve been on the couch the last few days. I’m gonna resist this for now lol

Academy in Apex had 7 of the coleman cylinders. Emphasis on had...
The Coleman 1 pound cylinders? There must be 60 at Academy in Burlington. I bought 2 of those as well. They had an end cap, the regular shelf, and a top shelf full of them.
