We also do a little VHF/UHF SSB when backpacking. When the band conditions are good, contacts out to several hundred miles are typical.

Winter QRP operations on the Appalachian Trail


Grassy Ridge Bald 6,100 ft. About a 3 mile (moderate) hike from the parking area.



Found a tree nearby some rock outcroppings to setup on. Got the 60M dipole up about 20ft.
