I was but a wee lad (well, 15), but I remember it well. My dad had been retired from the Marines by that point, but we had family in Jacksonville and still went down there four, five times a year. Lejeune and J-ville were so somber, a very heavy pall over the town and base. I will never forget it.

One of my neighbors lost her brother in the bombing ,she was so sad.
That was when I lived in Mooresville .

I remember spending all day on October 23, 1983 with my dad at the beach watching fishing boats come in with fall running fish for our freezers. We went to a seafood restaurant and that's where we were when we heard the news of the attack. Broke his heart and spirit as he simply couldn't believe that we had not yet done anything about the Iran hostage issue.

He died two months later at Christmas from a heart attack. So I remember 1983 very well.

I had forgotten this date, certainly not the event. Thanks for the reminder.

Another 10/23 remembrance, more personal for me. (Mods delete if not appropriate.)

Lance Corporal Francis P. Rosebrough, KIA Oct. 23, 1966, Quang Nam province, South Vietnam. Semper Fi and RIP, Butch.

I was in Basic Training at Ft Leonard Wood, MO when the drills had the platoon fall in the hallway. We were notified of TWO events that had recently happened. Bombing of the Marine barracks and the invasion of Grenada two days later. Had privates crying that we were going to war. I told them to shut up as it was going to be well over time we finished basic and AIT. I still had Airborne and Special Forces Qualification to go thru on top of that. Rest in Peace to all the warriors we lost that year.
