started bell pepper from seed many weeks ago / only 2 of 20 germinated

several weeks ago I attempted it again with another batch of seed and different starter mix STILL NOTHING

both attempts were with new seed and starter mix / have never had a problem before

did everything as in the past / sunny window sill, covered top until seeds started and uncovered when the seedlings were visible

what are the chances of getting two bad batches of seed?

I watched one of those videos that pop up on Facebook where they were showing how to take seeds from fruit and vegetables. They would stir the seeds in water and the ones that sank were the viable seeds.

Maybe you could test that out.

The gods are letting you know bell peppers shouldn't be consumed...

I had dismal results last year, this time I got a starter kit, the peppers germinated in four days.
I ordered these;

You can find similar product/pricing at local stores.

Some folk say the self watering starters work better, mine is not one. I have several of the center ones dry out unless the rest are over watered. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OGSZ82W/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1

Google seed warming matt and reptile warming matt. Both work.

They like warm.
They take forever.
I don't think they like tap water. None of mine germinated until they got rained on. They only got rained on because we were too lazy to bring them in and figured they had rotted anyway.
I usually end up buying pepper plants.

Same here I have grown just about every vegetable from seed....and it's far easier and faster to hit up my local farm supply and get what I want for $1.50 a plant. Speaking of which I need to secure my Cherokee purples before they get gone from stock like last year

I never liked tomatoes... until I had a Cherokee Purple last year. Built a 16' x 4' raised bed and am growing Cherokees and Black Krims. Also are Jalapeno, Chocolate Habanero, Fish, Poblano.
Mostly from RareSeeds https://www.rareseeds.com/search/?keyword=tomato

what kind of light setup is that?
I used to have a seedling rig with 4 Verilux Fluorescent T12 20W bulbs that worked great

We started some seeds this year, cantaloupe, lettuce and some jalapeño. The lettuce didn’t make it and jalapeños and cantaloupe seems to be doing ok. Hopefully the jalapeños do ok,our dogs have already trampled a few that we planted this past weekend.
