Colt 6920 is the closest to a issued M4 that you have experience with. I've always built my own ARs and have the utmost confidence in them. Only thing that they don't say is Colt or FN is the lower receiver. There are 5.56 rds that will penetrate light brush better, just have to look out for M855A1 projos.

If you like the ergonomics of the AR 15 but not impressed with the 556 caliber, I second the others recommending 6.8 SPC. Ammo prices are obviously higher than 556, and do fluctuate a little bit more, but depending on how much you shoot it’s definitely a viable option. If you buy yourself a complete lower, I will build you a nice nice 6.8 upper with great barrel.

This is 100% better than..I read..I hadda buddy that. I always go with the man who has spent the money to try platforms so HE knows personally what he can expect. That said...my feelings are hurt that you didn't pick your favorite Fighting rifle that we have all seen you shoot with great results. The 50 B&M bolt gun you shot here. The 7 pounder shooting 500 grains at 2,400 FPS.

On the plus side there would be no such thing as cover for the enemy only thicker concealment.

On the down side each shot would drive you backwards 4 feet forcing you to constantly readjust your aim.

Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF) Revolution.
Its an AR15 in 308.
NO, its not AR10.
Its literally an AR15, with a remachined bolt face to accept 308, and a larger mag port.
Due to the lower reciprocal mass of the AR15 bcg, the recoil is significantly lessened.
Of course, it is a POF, so it's not a peasant rifle and comes with a hefty price tag...
But, you do get what you pay for.

So you have an ultra reliable, piston driven, Fail Zero coated BCG, that doesn't get hot or dirty, and fires a more potent round, with way less recoil. Add a MagPul 25 Round PMag and you are all set.

I can only base this on my experience with them. And just like anything else someone will be along shortly to tell us about their perfectly balanced, completely reliable tack driver.

I have owned 3 and sold them all. I have fired a few more. All of them were of different manufactures. AR-10's were more designed for accuracy as a general rule and not reliability. Yeah they may be reliable with certain ammo but you're taking a design that was meant to function properly for a much lighter round and upscaling it for 308.

The AR 10 was first. It came out in 1955 I think.

My ideal “fighting rifle” is an AR15 from a reputable manufacturer i.e. DD, BCM, BPM, LWRC ect... even one of the “lower tier” ARs would be just fine as long as you have a good BCG and barrel and it’s all put together properly and you run enough rounds through it to ensure reliability.

I also thing a fighting rifle should have a sling, optic and a light.

For me it’s a BCM 14.5” mid length ar15. With a rail all the way to the end and a sandman k suppressor. It’d be topped with a trijicon mro and have DD fixed iron sights. Also would have a sure fire scout light with the Cloud Defensive tape switch mount. An alg act trigger and a pile of pmags stuffed with M855 would do the trick for me.

I have an AR-15, AR-10 and M1A in the safe.

If trouble was brewing and I had to pull one out in a hurry, it would be the M1A without hesitation. That's why it's at the front with the bolt open over a loaded magazine.

If I had to set out on foot not knowing whether I'd be gone a day or a month, it would be the AR15. I'm not sure what the weight difference is for 300 rounds in loaded mags between 5.56 & 7.62 but after a day it'll be around ten pounds. After a week it'll be twenty.

The AR-10 is just a range toy until I get an adjustable gas block to cure it's bad habit of shearing portions of the rim clean off the case and leaving chunks of brass floating around the trigger well. Until that stoppage is cleared, it's an expensive paperweight. That PSA is way overgassed, but it could be because I'm stubborn and just have to have a 178 gr. load because 155 just won't do.

If you can't find loaded magazines scattered around to pick up, it's because yours are laying around to pick up. If you're picking them up, they're probably all for AR-15s.

As for quality, read this post from some other forum by a guy who runs a range in Vegas.

The POF is great. And it starts at only 2700.00$.

I think I would take the Barnes, a couple glocks, and a clean used Civic instead. Heh.
Or two FALs, and wouldn't need to clean them as much as an AR...

I'll add something to the mix. After a day of shooting today, and having 3 cans pending, I have never been more in tuned to the sound of the AR platform and rifle fire. In a SHTF scenario, if you're tying to survive, a rifle blast is going to alert a lot of people to your location. Could also make you go deaf depending on when and where you have to fire it.

I'm interested to get my .300 blackout built (rail is on the way and the final piece) and then my cans cleared to see how quiet it is.

No movement/just around the compound M1A (scout).... example....fending off a biker gang who decided to visit
If I have to travel foot/vehicle AK (Chinese)

IMHO, if you have to fire a firearm in a SHTF situation then you've already lost. Signed, a guy that will probably die first in SHTF. :)

Regarding the actual question, I'll echo others and say Colt 6920. I own several ARs (mostly PSA uppers, Anderson lowers) and the Colts are the only ones I'd trust longterm.

Cans will help with temporary hearing loss, but if theyret inside of 100 yards, they're going to know a gun is going off.

The only quiet gun I have is a bolt rifle with subsonic ammo. Then you can still be hear out to maybe 50 yards if it's quiet.

Hell's fire, gentlemen, what the heck else we got to do save for sitting around rehashing old tall tales?

Our group has just started numbering all our BS stories. Now we just shout out "number 27" and everybody laughs like hell and we move on.

Ok weirdos. Let's get back on track a little.

So I've narrowed it down to a 10.5-12.5 AR pistol or an AK. It'll be a bit before I can purchase but with ammo prices, I'll most likely run steel (wolf)

Which rifle would be preferable? I know the AR will be lighter, but reliability, long term will the AK do better on a steel diet?

AR in 7.62x39. There’s a few of them here, some have a few hundred round through them, some have several thousand rounds through them, not a hiccup yet in either. Only issue I have is availability of magazines

If I went that route, I'd get the PSA ks47 so I could have an AR that takes AK mags

Whys that?
For realiablity, the chrome lining doesn't allow rust to build up inside and stick to the chamber if you leave a round in it. Remember steel can rust in a wet environment. If you're going to run steel cases, get a chamber brush for whatever you get. Scrubs that lacquer that's on the steel (to prevent rusting) from building up and gumming up the chamber.

I didnt think lacquer was used on modern steel?

There are a few good articles about shooting steel cased ammo on the internets. I shoot more than average for non-competition person. I shoot 1000+ 9MM and .45 ACP and, depending on the month, an equal number of rifle in 5.56 or .223. Right now the best ammo deals you will find are TargetSports prime membership. On average for rifle i save about $60 per 1000 buying wolf poly performance. According to the articles i have read, no matter what barrel or manufacturer you pick, shooting steel cased ammo by (insert Russian ammo manufacturer here) will degrade your barrel after 10 to 12 k rounds. I will have saved at least $600 during this time, so its a no-brainer if you shoot a lot i.e. barrel replacement cost is $100-$200 so you do the math. AK barrels are not made of magic metal, so I would have to see some empirical data to prove they are somehow different as far as barrel wear goes with steel ammo lines like Wolf. I love the AK platform. I have one and i like shooting it. BUT, accuracy is not expected to be as high from a typical AK as from an AR. As for reliability of AR's, I shoot mid length uppers and both mine go bang every time. I have a Rock River and an Aero Precision. Anyone who knows me well knows i don't like cleaning my guns, so if they don't run after 2-3K rounds between cleaning then i won't run them. Your gear has to work when you need it - when it is dirty. This is regardless of firearm type. Too many people put their life on the line with guns that jam on certain ammo or when they get dirty. For most i think its a case of buyers remorse, they put the money down, so they don't want to admit they bought a pos regardless of price. Again, most people don't shoot all that much or stress their firearms. If you do you will see what works and what breaks.

If you do some research you will find the sweet spot for AR platform is 14.5 barrel. Its what keeps the fps over 3000 which is considered the best for lethality with such a small round.

What matters is what you will do with it. The cheaper you go with the AR rifle the more prone to failures/issues. If money is biggest concern and reliability is king then get an AK. A lot of people buy an AR and they don't really shoot it much or train with it. An lightly used cheap gun will work forever. A gun you shoot and train with will be stressed, you will heat it up to super hot, bang it around, fire it when it is really dirty. This is where buying a good name is important when it comes to AR's. I have seen lots of AR's come through Apex's classes and fail. Cheaper stuff breaks when you run it hard.

This is my 2 cents, hope it helps.

So your ammo choice and barrel choice go hand in hand and greatly affect each other also.

If you are planning on running a sbr or pistol length barrel, the 55gr and 62gr ammo will not function as well as a heavier match/tumbling round.
The 55gr and 62gr fragmentation rounds are better from a 14.5" barrel or longer to keep the FPS into the performance range of the projectile.

I think this is what Variable was pointing out above. I just wanted to expand a little.

Ive been eyeing the PSA 10.5" builds. I really want an AK but if I start back running the AR a lot, ill be running wolf and few years down the road, id rather change the barrel on an AR in my garage, then mess with trying to change the AK barrel.
Thats the only reason im considering the AR.

I have a 16" barrel, that I could cut down to 14.5 and just build the AR instead of buying.

Choices choices.
