I think I want a Yaesu FT2DR and need it modded by the end of the month. Gigaparts is fresh out. I see DX, any other good places to order?

HRO. Don't know where you are to tell you where to get the mods done.

Looking for a retailer that will perform the mod and maintain factory warranty or offer their own.

Typically a 'mod' is not needed to receive out of band freqs.

Honestly I'm trying to avoid saying this because only a few on this board will understand why without a long explanation.

I need to relay info from FRS radio users in my vacinity to another freq that others are listening to a couple miles out. That's my work-around to stay legal. However, in case of life threatening situation that may be time sensitive, I want the capability to transmit to others who only have FRS. So, I want the full capability there if it's needed.

I'm a big fan a Yaesu. Own many products. Except their rotors. They suck. However, for the cost of the FT2DR, you could buy a case of these. BTW, no mod needed, as far as I know.

Many of the guys use the Baofengs. From what I've seen I need something more rugged, water-proof and more user friendly for an 18E annnnnddd without the disco light show.

This radio is not legal for transmission on FRS/GMRS or MURS. Here is the very easy at-home wide band mod for MARS/CAP legal use.

htperry, I've seen the mod and would have no problem doing myself. But, for $35-$40 they will do it for me and I get to keep the warranty.

Understood. I have a pair of KW TH-F6A's. Much better rig than the Baofengs. However if I drop the Boaefeng in the river when on a hike, I don't miss a step.

Whatever I get will be tethered. I've dropped a radio before, it wasn't mine, so I know the suck. 2 days later, 2 hours of searching the wood line and I found it.

I'd not be concerned about the 'radio police' if you mod the rig. Even the MARS/CAPS mod is only 'legal' if you are involved/licensed in MARS/CAP. The only cases of anyone being 'busted' by the radio police that I'm aware of, was when that person was causing interference to other services. So, it's not 'legal', however there is very little enforcement. Just be advised you could be violation of FCC rules and regs.

Hard to beat the functionality and the disposability of the Baofengs. Look at the UV-82C. Commercial rated and separate ptt's for UHF/VHF. I also hear they're more rugged.
Be sure it's the C model.

Or you could just carry another radio. That's one thing I don't about all in 1 radios. They're cool and all, but in a real situation you may need simultaneous comms on multiple bands, especially if you're ops. Just sayin'...

Then if it is an emergency situation he's still good to go, or at least has an affirmative defense.

Words on a piece of paper mean nothing too me in certain situations.

Absolutely. The point that I wanted to be sure got raised was that they were concerned about the legality of operating outside of frequency bands for which they were licensed. Obviously in a "grid down" situation pieces of paper go out the window, but thst isn't the only condition that applies. I forget the exact verbiage, but I believe that if there is a treat to person or property that one is legal to transmit in any means necessary to contact help. Consequently, given the circumstances, relaying between FRS and Ham would be legal even without a license.
