A groundhog that acts like that is likely rabid. I would have done the same thing if it was coming at me like that.

It did charge! I shook one out of a tree one time trout fishing and then decided to chase it with a fly rod. When it had enough, I was the one running away!

My only guess is to how all of that happened was a report of an animal that appeared to be rabid came in. Police were first on the scene. Blocked traffic to asses the situation and avoid a car accident while he waited on animal control. Before they came Ground hog went honey badger and was dispatched.

Seriously (???) though, aggressive behavior like that is frequently associated with rabies. Probably necessary.

Obtw, if you ever have to deal with a suspected case of rabies, if anyone was bitten DON'T go for the head; if the brain is damaged by the shot, they can't determine if it was rabid or not... So someone is getting treated. At least that's what our animal control officer told me.

I can foresee hellish heckling in store for this fella back at the cop locker room.

That cop better hope he didn't shoot the wrong groundhog.

Turns out that groundhog had a record. This picture was taken of him back in 2015 after he pistol whipped a chipmunk and was cought running an underground prostitution ring evolving multiple moles.

But, he was a good boy. Had plans to get his own alfalfa field. Was really turning his life around. He just hung out with the wrong rodents, that's all.

My guess was rabies.....most critters would run away from people when confronted.

Groundhogs will give chase without rabies. We had the on the farm. I've killed one with 20ga bird shot. Made the internals, out-ternals.

Had one run in the garage when we open the door a couple of weeks ago. I got him out and he ran up a tree. He died of lead poisoning.

There is a creek down in my backyard and we have a cornfield (in the summer) that is next to said creek. The creekbed is absolutely eat up with groundhog burrows, and they do love making the small trip from the creek to the corn. I can't count the times I've had them run at me when I'm down there, and it ain't because of rabies. I never pay them no mind when they do this.

But anyway, the point of starting the thread was because of how dumb the drivers were for stopping in the first place (they were stopping before trigger happy police dude arrived). These are probably the same people who drop their speed to 35 and turn on their flashers on interstate in a light rain.

As for animals in or crossing the road, well, most people around here just go around them instead of causing a traffic jam. But den agin, weez jess cuntry folk 'round heeur.
